Old owners

I just e-mail the previous owner of my car to give him an update and he told me he had come across a picture of the car taken in the late 70s and he would send it out to me if I wanted it.  I should have it in a couple days and will post it up when I get it.

Since I am only the 3rd owner it made me think I should track down the original owner and see what I can find out. What dealership he got it from, any other pictures he might have, why did he sell etc.


Have any of you tracked your car back thriugh the previous owners to the dealer and what have you found on the way about your car? What other questions would you have of previous owners of your car?

After asking for photos and paperwork, the next question I would ask is if he/she can recall any memorable experiences with the car

My car has had 6 previous owners (2 car yards). The last owner had it for 15 years.
I traced right back to the 2nd owner (1st in New Zealand) an old Canadian guy who brought the car over.

Still knew the options, "Oh, yes, the 440 Magnum car" column shift bucket seat option.
He was quite an old guy, my guess, in his 70's so he had a good memory.

He bought it from a lady in Canada who had it for 2,000 miles then he shipped it into the country along with himself.
A Mr Jean Claude Canvel was his name. He put 100 miles on it and sold it with 2,100.
First registered in New Zealand on the 7th of July 1971.
A couple of funny things on the Vehicle registration papers that still stand to day are: the cc rating is 2800cc and the VIN has a "V" where the "U" should be. So it reads as a 440-SIXPAK with 2.8 Litre engine. lol

I've left it as is for now...doesn't bother me and could help in keeping my car safe.
I figure it was done this way to obtain insurance plus at a lower price.

yeaaahhh...NZ, I forgot to mention that our newly elected Prime Minister has declared that ALL MoPars with Canadian history be returned to Canada for re-assignment.  I will expect my (your) car soon!

I tried to research my car at one time but Michigan only keeps records for 10 years.      How else do you get the records??

I always wondered if a company like Carfax could trace past histories but I think I read some where they only go back about 10 years  or so also. I've owned my cuda for 28 years. About a month ago a friend I used to work with--who moved out of state about 8 years ago--calls up out of the blue and wants to know if I still had the cuda. He had just moved back to Boise and one of the guys he now works with is the granddad of the guy I bought my car from. When I talk to the previous owner I'm going to ask  What happened to the rear window louvers !!!! In my dream world he still has them and wants to see them back on the original car and gives them to me. "NOT"  At least I will get some early history, would like to know who the original dealer was at least.

Your VERY lucky there Tro cats  I've been trying to trace back my R/T with no luck as of yet. My father, and an acquaintance found mine about 15 years ago. No title/no broadcast sheet/no fender tag/no V.I.N  I Asked recently about it, he said he remembered the previous owner saying the dash was thrown out because it had cracks, bye bye V.I.N.  Thats where I stand right now  Anyone got any ideas how trace the past?

I am sure most of you know, but just in case......

I have 100's of prior owner histories waiting to be claimed, search the "found" section of www.hamtramck-historical.com for your VIN.

I mailed one of them out to a member of this site today. 

Another tip;

Go to www.google.com and use your VIN as a search word, you may just get lucky.

The only thing I'm missing on mine is the window sticker and the receipt. The paperwork has the name of the original buyer on it. I have never tracked him down. But my car was originally a GC anyway, so why bother I giuess.

The Chally for us was easy, an in-state car and we are the third owner, the second owner was on the salvage title as seller along with his insurance co. and the original owners name was in the glove box along with the original manual. The Charger was a bit more difficult. It come from Maryland and "lived" within about 50 mile from it's dealer (Wheaton Dodge), when I brought her home that I guess was the first time she left her home state. The dealership by law could not help me much. The state DMV was helpful but only to a point. I of course had the third owners name (I bought the car from him) and he had bought it from a friend. But I wanted to locate the original owner, the guy who ordered the car. Guess who helped me the most and gave me the name of the original owner? The Maryland State Police. I sent off a letter to the State Commander, he returned a letter and told me he had passed on my requested information to a Sergent and that he would be in touch with me. I thought "Yeh, maybe in a couple years." Two weeks later I got my information, they would not give me any addresses or phone numbers but did give me a name, which later I sorta conned the dealership to confirm. The original owner had died anyway, so I would not  have contacted his family anyway, but in the begining I was hopeful of perhaps getting a picture of the car and the guy who ordered her. Well at least I got my information.

So, if you know where (State) your car was purchased just perhaps that state's State Highway Patrol will be able to help you out, seems their records go back a little further than some of the state's DMV records
