often the small blocks & 383s used the lightest 833 with the 307 front brg & had the front brg retainer diameter of 4.3" , this is not cool from the poiint that the trans had a different bolt pattern in the tranny case & used the smaller retainer so the 4.8" retainer will not bolt onto the front of the 307 trans case & the larger cases with the 380 brg & retainers cannot be cut down to 4.3" to fit , leaving 2 options , have the belhousing cut out to 4.8" or find a bel with the larger 4.8 or 5.2" hole

Moparnut,

The casting number on the smallblock OD bellhousing is 202507 and it is found on the back face where the tranny bolts up. Good luck in your search.

Here is the casting number from back on page three.

Maybe this is why a 4.80 is impossible for me to find for a SB,I dont think they ever put a hemi tranny behind a SB,did they?It sure narrows the field for me to look for a bell since i can stop asking ebay sellers if their SB housing has a 4.80" hole, since they never made them?

"There were three different diameter retainers: a 4.35" was used on most 60's A-833s, a 4.80" was used on hemi's 440s, and some 71-74 HD applications, and a 5.125" was used on 1975-1987 A-833-OD's".

I agree, I asked a number of sellers now that had bellhousings with the casting #'s corresponding to a 340 on the chart, and they all had 4.3" holes.  :dunno:

72redchally, What is the rest of that part number? I can find one for moparnut if I have the rest of it. Thanks,
Rob

I think that was all that was there. I will look again tonight. If it helps in the search the "507" is definately the last three digits of the number.

Sorry about that other post redchally, Mopar used to use 7 numbers on their parts, so I thought it was short. The number you gave was good.  Thanks again,
Rob

No problem.

I have a lead on two trucks with the bellhousings still in them but, the guy won't give me a price to part with them because they are "rare". After I found the NOS one for $40 I didn't pursue it any further.
