Pistol grip lens
« on: May 22, 2002 - 05:58:48 PM »
??? CAN SOMEONE HELP? I had this posted on the Charger board and received only 1 response, which was not an easy solution to accept. MY PROBLEM: I bought a new shift pattern lens for my pistol grip, but removing the grips I find there is no key or set screw that holds the lens bezel in place. SO, HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE LENS?? >:(  The response I got from the Charger board was that the bezel is "peened" onto the shifter, it DOES NOT come off. His answer he got was to "pry" out the old lens and merely silicon the new lens to the top of the bezel.  ::) Is this really the only answer? What if you screw up the bezel trying to get the old one out? Has anyone on this site changed the shift pattern lens on their pistol grip? If so, I'd like to know how you went about doing that little job!  THANK YOU ;D In the mean time my Charger is patiently waiting for her newest part.  8)

check out gunslinger727@earthlink.net
they have what you need, a new upper bezel is 25 and the shift patern lense is 10 and they glue in.
good luck.  Jack

Thanks pandamarie, but my bezel is in excellent shape and I already have an exact reproduction of the shift pattern lens from Year One. The PROBLEM is getting the old lens from the bezel, which surrounds the outer lip of the original lens. There appears to be no apparant way to remove the bezel. My fear in attempting to pry the old lens out is damaging the bezel. You mentioned Gunslinger selling the bezel and lens, if they sell it, then there has to be a way to remove the old one, right? That's, what I'm trying to find out, how to remove the bezel.  ???

The reply you got was correct which is why I didn`t answer. The lens is glued into the top / bezel & the bezel is peened onto the shifter below the lens. I would drill a small hole into ther old lens & run a drywall screw or similar into the lens to pull the old lens out , this way you will not damage the bezel ;)

Thanks to the response you guys, at least the drilling and using a screw to remove the old lens sounds safer than gouging and prying it out. Whoever designed that puppy had a great idea but a very poor engineering concept for future maintenance, I hope it was a design from Hurst and not one from MaMopar. Well, it looks like rain today in SE Ohio so car show cruisin is out, sooooo where is my drill? I'll let you know how it goes. :P

;D ;D ;D I guess I was overly worried about that little project of changing shift pattern lens', it turned out to be a piece of cake man! Taking C.P.'s advice I drilled a hole in the center of the old lens, when the screw was inserted the old lens was so brittle that it cracked right down the middle. A slight lift with my penknife and it seperated and came right out. What happened next eas a most welcome surprise. I decided to "dry fit" the new lens before appling silcon or glue, when I did it "snapped" into her "new home".  I'm sure to remove it I would have to use the same procedure as I did for the old one. NO MESSY GOB OF GLUE EVEN ! Take a look,
I wish the "before" shot looked as good as the pic shows, if it had I would not of thought of replacing it.
