Adding Vinyl Top ?
« on: February 23, 2003 - 05:04:23 PM »
I have a '72 Cuda that does not have a vinyl top. I love how they look. How much trouble is it to add one? It has to look factory...

I have a feeling tracking down the trim would be hell..

Just make sure your roof is in really good shape before doing this since vinyl tops rot roofs.  I ended up replacing my roof skin already...  Moldings shouldn't be too hard to get from some of the speciality salvage yards like Mo-par City (1-800-426-HEMI) or Stephen's Performance (256-247-1332).  I think the moldings around the window are the same and all you need is the molding for the bottom of the top.

What I think will be a bigger challenge is figuring out exactly where the holes are at in the body but once you have the moldings and lay them in place, that may work itself out too.

I just pulled the vinyl top from my car. All mouldings are the same with exception of needing the moulding that goes below the rear window.

Keep the car in a garage after getting the top on, rust moves fast.

I'll be adding vinyl to mine come summer.  I think a liberal coating of POR-15 is in order first.   ;)  Anyone who can tell us where the holes for the molding goes ?

I'll try to remember to take some pictures next time I'm up working on my car of where the holes are...before I grind them off.

Pics are up at

for the location of the vinyl moulding rivets.
This is a 71 Cuda. Pics are titled vinylX.jpg

Might want to look at the roof rot photo too as a reminder to keep your car in a garage with that top on!

Man,

That roof rot is bad !!  Luckily, I'm startin out with a solid roof.  Looks like I better take care to keep it that way.  Thanks for the photos.   :)
