    Custom Std Dash Instrument Clusters - Lets see em!

    I just bought another gauge that i needed for my barracuda. i now have oilpsi, water temp, and volts hanging under my dash frame in cups. Looks ok...but i do now i have three out of the five gauges i'd need to do a custom dash (speedo & fuel level)  :woo:

    So i've decided to pickup a doner instrument cluster bezel at mats and gather the two more gauges to do a swap.

    Can i see what you've done? I'm using Autometer Pro-Comps (black)

    I did this on the cold winter days up here, the shift light came from Raptor Performance. If you decide to cut the benzel make sure you leave the upper line on that way it will match the headlight benzel when installed.

       FWIW I saw recently somene was making a guage housing that replaces the center speaker grille on to of the dash.  :bigshades:

    Looks great! likely i will just be using the standard 2 5/8 gauge holes. I do have one question. How did you go about hooking up the mechanical speedo? did you need a new cable? anything else?

    Hey Goody, I'm looking into the same thing. I'm thinking Autometer pro-comp Ultra-Lite guages. The holes  are 2-5/8 but this dash here looks to have the guages sunk in further. I'm thining he used the 2 1/16 guages and the 5" spedo and they all sunk into the holes. That way you don't have the guage trim sticking out, but sunk in. Not sure, still trying to get more info, mainly on the mechanical spedo as you mentioned. Check out how the guages sit in this dash, looks pretty good.

    Goody, here is the website I found that got me considering this path. I was looking for a ralley dash, but did a quick search and found this car. For me to properly convert to a ralley dash would be pretty expensive, I have A/C and a 4 switches, so that makes things a little more difficult.

    I'm also looking at what has to be done to do this to a standard dash, I have the tack mounted there already, so its a matter of switching over the rest of the guages. Note from the picture the one oil pressure guage I have that doesn't look right when its sticking out. I think the white face guages sunk in look great.

    i think i know what they did!  :rofl: seems so obvious now. instead of pushing the gauge through the hole like you did, they just mounted it from the back side. which is why you cant see the bezel on their gauges, those are 2 5/8".

    seems so obvious!! duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!  :rofl: :bigsmile:

    I will be doing a conversion myself.  After looking through many pics and coming up with ideas this is what I decide on.
    I want to keep it as stock as possible but also add a touch of class so Auto-meter Phantom (white face gauge to match white interior) using a 5" speedo and then 2 5/8" tach, oil, water, fuel.  I will flush moun tthe gauge so the bezel is even with the surface, not protrudig and if anything slightly beneath it for a "tunnel or cockpit" look.  For monitoring voltage, I am considering this http://www.customdynamics.com/LED_battery_gauge.htm 2nd one down remote flush mount.  I think that will be cool and do the trick, a single led installed and green would mean good to go.


    I'll be sure to take lots of pics when I start and detail the steps.

    I like the flush look but I would be concerned that in order to get the 2 1/8" gauges flush from the back, you'd have to cut the front bezel. The "cups" are slanted on the back to fit the slanted gauge lens.  Looks like the smaller gauges are mounted flush against them, so I'm thinking they had to be cut to do that.  I know that from the front, the 2 5/8" fits perfectly in the cups without modification and can simply be clamped down.  That allows them to be completely removed and could go back to stock if you wanted to. :2cents:
