Regional Food Favorites
« on: March 17, 2006 - 04:04:15 PM »
I travel for business about 1-2 times a month and one of my favorite things to do is to find out what the regional favorite resturants are in the area and see what kind of local meals they serve up. I try to watch Mark Decarlo on the Travel Channel ( Taste of America) when he travels the country looking for things like the loose meat sandwich at Maderite resturant in Iowa or the great ribs in Mephis.

Do you have any favorite resturant or dishes found only in your part of the country in your town or city?

If your ever in Toledo, Ohio a must try is Gino's Pizza. There pizza has just a slight sweetness to the sauce and you can get your pizza lightly done, medium,or well done. My favorite is well done when the cheese has had a chance to bubble over and get crispy on the edges.

Richard,

In this part of Maryland, it's crab cakes, or blue crabs. I had never had blue crabs until I moved here(insert dirty joke here). I had NO idea how to open them.  :dunno: It was quite an experience, and quite tasty too. It has become expensive over the years, but blue crabs from the Chesapeake Bay are awesome!!!

Mek I'll trade you some red crabs for some blue crabs.

Out here, Dungeness Crabs are all over out in the Ocean. So are King Salmon. So is the famous San Francisco Sour dough bread.
But this year, there won't be likely any fishing of King Salmon because the Dept. of Fish and Game and the Feds are about to shut down the salmon fishing.Three years ago, the feds misallocated to much water to agriculture on the Klamath river during the fall spawn. That killed almost the entire population of them there. So for me and others who go fishing a lot, there won't be any smoked salmon or BBQ'd salmon to make this year.
Mike, Fremont, CA.

There used to be a restaurant just across the border in Palomas Mex. called Tillie's that had the best nachos I've ever eaten. It consisted of a plate of thick corn tortilla chips layed out individually with refried beans on each chip, then a slice of jalapeno, then a slice of mexican cheese. The plate was then put in an oven until the cheese started to melt, then was served hot. The mess the restaurants pass off around here now as nachos couldn't hold a candle to Tillie's!

Pasties are prevalent in Upper Michigan and Northern Wisconsin....Meat pies with potatoes, carrots, rhutabages, onions, and some sort of meat (usually ground beef) all wrapped in a pie crust....These were eaten by the miners of the time and I believe they came over here from Great Britain....Awesome Grub!

Lemon-Twist yr right! I heard it was started by Welsh coal miners. My grand dad was a miner in the UP (after moving up from ALABAMA that is) Pasties R GR8!! For the unaware its pronounced past e  and is not related to anyting from early area gentlemens clubs!

Any way Mlwaukee area is loaded w good places to go from pubs to fine dinning. A few great old german places over 100 years old. I notice it the most when I travel, alot of places really dont have good restaraunts but people that live there jst dont know cause they never been to one. In all fairness tho I did manage one Many years ago before I was a recycler so my opinion may b a bit biased. :faint:

Ah yes, Pasties from across the bridge in Iron Mountain, Michigan....My personal favorite is Gino's Pizza from Chicago.  It's the greatest pizza you'll taste, but the price is somewhat steep.  Well worth it, either way.

Sounds like shepards pie(english dish so your miner story makes sense). Caserole dish with corned beef, potatoes, carrots, whatever you want to put in there, with a pastry crust topping.  My parents are english so I've had this is few times and now in my family we have modified this to just have hamburger and cut-up potatoes in a caserole bowl.

If you get to Philly Pa, got to try a cheesesteak. Thats finely chopped steak, cheese, and onions and maybe peppers or some other toppings on a nice torpedo roll. Quite the philly speciality. Probably the most famous place for these is Genos in south philly, but there are plenty of local places that make better steaks than them. One of the best is a place called Italian Kitchen in east landsdowne (south suburb of philly).
