Down-Under Education - New Zealand & Australia
« on: March 20, 2006 - 06:51:18 AM »

OK....for those of you that never passed Geography, listen up.  :lol2:

New Zealand has NOTHING to do with Australia.
We are two TOTALLY different places each with unique people, culture and landscapes.

From the two countries closest points we are 1760 miles (2833 km) in distance away.
It's about a 3-4 hour flight from one country to another.

I posted this because there are a lot of people who think we are one in the same, far from the truth.
It's like me or people down under saying: "America, oh yeah, close to Brazil."
Or "Canada and America are one in the same", which of course, is not true.....you get my point.

There was one thread that said to watch out for the Cyclone in Australia NZ, which is 3500 miles away from me. lol
That's the same distance (slightly more) from New York to London. Don't worry Hemi Challenger, kind thoughts.

We have different accents, terrain and are fierce rivals in sports. (Rugby, Cricket, League ANYTHING)
The Australians on this board would be just as offended. Calling an Aussie a kiwi is like calling a Japanese man a Pacific Islander and vice versa. They are patriotic like us. We are in good terms with each other and are known as "Cousins" across the ditch. We are Australia's biggest tourist % and Australia is New Zealands.

As you can see from the attached map we are quite far apart, we are the smaller nation (4 million on land bigger than the entire UK). Australia has 20,910,000 people. We are both classed as being from "Down Under".

Hope that helps clear up some confusion.
Cheers,
NZ440R/T

I see your point NZ! Did not know there was so much distance! I just have to comment on one thing, you say NZ and AU don't have anything to to with each other, but isn't both countrys part of the Commonwealth and Queen Elizabeth is the head of state in both countrys?

Yes, this is true. Good point and thanks for pointing that out. Both countires are run by Governments.
In fact, Commonwealth games are on as we speak.... ;)

I basically meant nothing to do in terms of being one in the same, my bad.  :icon16:

I dont care what you say, they are the same thing. Basically anything that isnt within driving distance is all grouped together in my mind under "too d**n far"  :icon16: That includes everything from parts of the United States to Australia to New Zealand........

To be fair though, Japanese, Hawaiians, Washingtonians, Canadians and Alaskans can all be Pacific Islanders, several others as well. It certainly is not offensive. The Pacific is home to lots of islands, some of us live on them.

No Barry, not offensive but not correct. We are a Pacific Nation, Islands I was merely pointing out that that is the difference in calling NZ and Aussie one in the same. Just funny how some folks think we are ONE country.  :screwy:

When in fact we are the same distance as the African continent and South America away!

Chevy - No sorry I haven't heard of that place....it sounds like they would be in the far North Island though.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
