My originals were so close to going in but they had a few tiny scratches that just didn't make the grade.
We used the aftermarket cluster decals too. The were good on the 4 cluster panel but the left hand piece was about 5mm too short either way. We placed them on and used a interior silver (or metal colored) pen to match up with the existing metal edges to compensate for the decal being too short. You can't tell the difference, looks great.

Plus we had to make sure the cluster was spot on and not over lapping or bulging out as quite a few do.
Sorry about the small blurry photos.

I think shrinking is a result of direct sunlight exposure and/or heat. If you keep your car covered up or garaged I bet you can reduce a lot of that. I'm willing to chance it for awhile. Who knows, by the time it starts to shrink or bubble, maybe the PG metal repros will be <$100   :dunno:

Mike, the car i had this happen to was garage kept. Only time it spent outdoors was at car shows. Maybe if you added some extra adhesive to the vinyl, it would stay on better????

How much is the PG piece? Do they have a website?

As with any type of refurubishment, if you don't prep the part correctly, the results are not going to be satisfactory.

Too much.

Anyone who is and or has replaced their original face plate with the repop one, send me your original one.  I will pay the shipping.

Agreed - I stripped mine to bare metal and polished the bezels before appyling the decal. I hope it will stay stuck better but shrinkage is shrinkage. Will have to see what it looks like in a year or two.

For the money I paid, I am very happy for now.   :ylsuper:

I prepped mine just like you did, and it still bubbled. Maybe the problem is that the vinyl expands and contracts at a different rate than the aluminum back plate. The originals are some type of photo transfer process, not a vinyl overlay. The first time i noticed the bubbles was after a HOT day at a car show when the car sat out in the show field all day.

With all the $$ i have in my instrument cluster, i did not think $159 for both bezels was an excessive $$ number...but then again I'm so used to paying thru the nose for e-body parts, nothing surprises me anymore. $200 jack hooks, $3100 steering wheels, $1200 parts books?????   LOL

I ended up buying the repo bezel from PG.  Looks very nice, woodgrain is a little lighter in color than original but I like it.

DY3,

Don't have it installed yet but I can take some pics of it next to original.
