Vin number crisis
« on: March 22, 2006 - 12:33:02 PM »
Heys guys its me again.... I was lookin at the vin number on my car to try to find out what is was originally.... and was wondering how to figure out original interior colors, original style gas cap ....if there were any guages -tachs that were supposed to be there. Does anyone know a site or book you can buy to tell you these things. Sorry for the dumb questions this my first car to ever do this with so i am as new as it gets.
i would like to take my plain challenger and turn it into a rt if possible let me know what yall think  thanks again

Most of the info you are looking for is located on the fender tag and not the vin # on the dash.  There are tools to decode the fender tag  or just post the info here and someone will do it for you.

Besides the fender tag, maybe you will be lucky enought to find a build sheet somewhere. Behind a seatback, or under the rear seat, or in any number of places they could have tucked it away. The VIN number will just tell you the plant it was built at, and the engine it came with. Unfortunatley, that's all I had to work with on mine.  :crying:  Why the heck someone would steal the fender tag to a base Challenger, I do not know.  :banghead:

:bananasmi hey guys thansk alot for the info it would have taken me hours upon hours to get that. Does that information tell how mnay were made bu any chance?? also another question.. The car originally had the 318 like yall said  ... now it has a 440... my question is will a car with power steering be able to have regular exhaust manifolds instead of headers .... the headers are a pain in the rear... i have to replace the starter and the  headers completely block everything it looks like they are more trouble than their worth thanks again guys

My convertible was originally a 318 SE car, so it has the power steering. Now it has a 440-6pack and I am using the iron exhaust manifolds without a problem. Clearances are kinda tight here and there, but you'll get that with a big block in an
E-body. Also, VIN or fender tag won't tell you how many, they are specific to the car as far as information.

I would probably go with a low profile starter to help with the clearance problems!
