What parts are most valuable?
« on: March 29, 2006 - 09:15:55 AM »
Looks like I have to cannibalize my car to finance resto.  :'(
What OEM parts that can be replaced by reasonable repro parts, are the most valuable?
eg. perfect woodgrain steering wheel replaced by aftermarket Tuff wheel

Choices I have:
1. Let it sit
2. Use $ from parts to get it on the road
3. Rob a bank
4. Kill all the big $$ collectors who are driving the prices out of reach of anyone with an ordinary income!

Just better make sure that down the road you arent going to want the parts you sell. Likely it will be even more ridiculous price wise compared to when you sold it.

just my  :2cents: you will be sorry if you sell off parts of the car.

With that said I would pay a good price for a solid passenger side fender which could be replaced with a aftermarket one.

Not many big dollar items except for shaker parts and date coded engine parts. I'd re-think your solution and sell house items first ( Stereo, big screen tv, etc)

As some have already said, you might (and probably will) regret selling parts later down the road. However, if you are going to do a restomodification and dont really need some parts, then you could probably get some spending cash by selling your seats, gauge cluster, steering wheel, seat belts, and a couple other odds and ends.....but thats only if they are in really nice condition.

Anything you sell is going to sell cheaper than what you will be able to replace it for later. It seems to me that you would be digging a bigger hole for yourself. You can't drive a car without the steering wheel, a tuff wheel is even big bucks now. You need the seats, you need he tires and rims. I suppose you could sell the side glass and act like it's always rolled down.  :roflsmiley: Personally, I would just let it sit and restore as you are able to. Selling oof parts will only put you further behind.

Having said that....IF your car is a number's matching HEMI or some rarity, then you could sell the car and with the money buy a driver. A 71 Hemi project would bring in more than enough money to buy a driveable 74 model. Otherwise, just take it slowly.

I have to agree with all of the above....what you sell today someday you'll want to replace, at 2-3 times what you sold it for. Save the $$ up and restore tha car as you are able to afford it.

I don`t think you would make enough $ anyway. There are a few parts that could be replaced cheaper with aftermarket stuff but otherwise new aftermarket parts will not save you that much. Many of us work overtime or two jobs to have money for our projects and it still takes years to get them done.

Keep your car together and buy parts when you can. Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul is never a good idiea!! Not quite the same but close! You'll be glad you kept your original parts in the future. :grinyes:
