Paint Color vs Value
« on: April 01, 2006 - 08:52:41 AM »
I have been watching a restored Chally that looks to be a nice car. R/T big block automatic! Great highway cruiser. But the car was painted a late model PPG green, hence the poll. This would not have been my color choice for sure! I know you guys (and gals) got an idea on this .. :feedback:
Thanks
70 Chally R/T Convertible- Yes she's really got a HEMI, no she's not a Charger!

Color is really a matter of personal taste. I'd say if the the car was originally a color that was not all that desireable, and it's not matching numbers, a color change would not hurt it. If it's a "good" color originally, then a color change would hurt it's value, same as if it was a #'s factory correct resto that was not painted the original color.

Just my :2cents:

Great topic, lets say you have an original 71 340/4 speed Cuda. Originally GY9 - not the prettiest color. So the car now is painted a non original color(s) and houses an E body Dana, Keisler five speed and 511 Hemi ?? How bad does the paint hurt the value ??

I agree if it was gold and you changed to another factory correct color I don't think it would hurt the value.

Terribly. Your car is almost worthless. I will volunteer to take it off your hands.  :jumping:

Seriously, it's your car, do what you want. Even if it's numbers matching, you can always paint it back later on to it's original color. No real sense in keeping it a color that doesn't do it for you.

:iagree:  My car was orginally Lemon Twist yellow and someone painted it Vitamin C orange.  After many years of neglect the car needs body work and paint.  I just can't get myself to like the Lemon Twist so I am going to repaint is Vitamin C orange again.

This is a tough one, but if it's a good factory color, like Panther Pink, Plum crazy purple, black etc, then keeping the original color may be the best way to go. Or maybe if the cars built as a resto.
But like others have said it's your car, paint isn't permanent and you can always change it back later. It's your car enjoy it.
If I was at a car show and Rev & Redlines car was there (non factory paint) That would get my attention over the factory colors. That paint job makes me
My Challenger was a factory Gold color with matching interior and there is NO WAY i'm putting it back to that color!!!  :puke:
Besides the black just looks sinister.

Mine was a B5-Blue car in and out. Now a white car with black interior.
I don't think I hurt the value much at all. As long as the paint is good and YOU like it.

I didn't have to worry about value, being in New Zealand these cars sell for big $$$ no matter what, color, engine or #'s. I've got what counts to me, the numbers matching drivetrain, but my car isn't 100% correct.
Worst comes to worst the new owner (if selling) can change the color back to it's original shade if he so desires at any stage and within 1 month have a factory correct show car again....piece of cake. #'s and correct.
Personal choice, mine was built to appear stock with upgraded new-tech goodies (most hidden) and the factory bugs were replaced with more modern components. I actually think I may have made some $$$ on swapping paint.

At the end of the day......it's night time. lol Sorry couldn't help myself....at the end of the day the car is only worth what someone wants to pay, value is in the eye of the beholder.

Good luck and let us know what happens and how you get on.
Sounds like one hell of a car set to run hard.

Cheers,
Carl

Not to dis any Gold Challenger owners but IMO you made more $$$ by painting it a non-correct color.
Love it!

Why thank you very much Evil!  We actually get a lot of comments about being the only challenger (well, many actually say Charger) people have seen in that color.  Our car was originally DY3.  Although it is a very rare color, it is also an extremely boring color!  I don't think it hurt the value of our car...we like it and it catches people's attention.  My next mopar will be a cuda and it will be black no matter what color it had from the factory!

I agree My 73 was originally factory silver and THAT color didn't hold up at all! when I bought it the previous owner had painted it black! I liked it that color so when I had it re-painted I re-painted it black with blue pearl in it!! definately not a factory color!! BUT I LIKE IT!! and I am driving it! so I agree that the next owner (when I die!!!) can re-paint it silver if they so desire!! but I think it looks much better black!!!!

I guess I was more wondering about an off the wall paint job ( not a solid color ) like mine. I didn't paint the car mind you. Was painted late 70's and hasn't been back on the road since. Didn't like it at first but it has grown on me a lot. I like the old school feel of it anymore. Other than the paint and the hood modification the car is pretty much how it should have been.
