Who has used dash covers?
« on: April 01, 2006 - 06:49:20 PM »
1A auto sells them for $103.
Has anyone put one in? Are they good?
Is this a good company or do you suggest someone else?

I assume you mean the dash caps.  Legendary has them for under $100.  I bought one, but haven't put it in yet.  My buddy has one and it looks good, you have to look close to tell its not original.

With these dash caps, on the 70's is the barracuda scribed into the right side and the 71+ is the spot for the emblem there?

I have a 71+ cap for my challenger and it fits quite nice for a $100 piece, it has the inset for the emblem but its a little shallow.  Where it goes around the vin tag mopar muscle recommends heating up the cap a little and pressing it under the vin tag to make a nice finish.

When I first bought my car, it had one of these dash caps on it. It didn't look bad at all, but I just didn't like the plastic feel of it. Eventually I bit the bullet and bought a new dashpad. So I'll say this is a good alternative if you are strapped for $$$.

Dash  cap before instalation.  I made a mistake and got one for  70 Cuda, doesn't have a place for the emblem.  These are made by Palco, who also make door panels.

looks good - your center speaker grille seems to fit better than mine. My dash is a Palco also

One corner of the speaker grille stuck up, I heated the dash cap where that leg of the grill went and pushed it down til the grill was level.

did you have to cut holes for the speaker grille legs to fit down inside? I think that may be part of my problem, I just havent cut the holes yet

No, 3 of mine were fine, the fourth sat up a little high, so I heated the dash cap where that leg fit and got it soft enough to push the leg down.  I guess you could always cut the legs down, but i didn't want to do something I might regret later.

So educate me please folks cause I have to do the same thing. $12K for body and paint, $10k for the engine and miscellaneous bucks for the etc's etc's. I will most likely have to use the pad for my 71 rally dash that goes into my 73 if I want to continue life as I know it with my wife with all my body parts I came with from the factory. Unfortunately the dash has one small crack and some small repair job gone wrong. So the questions are -
1. do you remove the old pad with the cap job?
2. If not, how do you get the pad to hide the ugly cracks?
3. Do you glue the whole piece down like a kitchen countertop?
4. Will it be easier to do the job in the car or out of the car?(my windshield can stay out for this)
