Power Steering Pump, where to buy?
« on: April 03, 2006 - 10:50:13 PM »
I just found out my power steering pump is breathing it's last breath.  Where would you go to get a new one?

I could do the cheap O'Reilly's A1 Cardone special for about $60.  JEGS doesn't have them I guess (their searchability sucks).  Summit has ones for Plymouth, but the earliest applicable year is '77.  Year One has it, but there's gotta be a better source.  Mancini didn't seem to have anything but brackets and serpentine kits.  Where would you go?

And then there seem to be Saginaw or Federal.  What would I want for a '73 Cuda, and where should I look?  Thanks, and sorry to ask so many questions lately.  Cheers.

Top federal.
Bottom saginaw.

Nothing wrong with a Cardone rebuild, or send yours to Firm Feel and get it rebuilt.

I was just looking through this thread trying to figure out my power steering pump that is on my car. The pulley doesn't lign up and throws the belts off, I have a new bracket set but the pump is different then what i'm familiar with. Anyone have any ideas what this may be off of? And what should I buy for a new pump, Federal or Saginaw? Is it possible the pulley on this pump is just on backwards and if I turned it around would lign up fine?

Thanks
Dave

That pump looks like the federal and the pulley is on backwards.

Thanks a lot mopar73340, I just took the pump off and it the hoses are cracked right through, so that is my leak problem, I will swap the pulley around and that should fix the alignment! Are those pulley's hard to take off? Do they press on and off or screw?

Ok, my pulley isn't on backwards cuz they only press on one way, Looks like someone tried to pry it off and bent the bulley out, I just hammered it back in as straight as I could, if it doesn't work i'll get a new pulley. What all can I get a pulley off of? Does this pump look odd to anyone? The brackets bolt to the pump different then the ones i've seen.

The cooler is actually bolted the to rear of the pump, I know the AAR cars had coolers, but not sure if this is off an AAR car or if its an after market cooler, bracket seems to fit for the pump.

Thanks. Unless it is being reproduced, I think that's a pretty rare part.

hope this isn't a highjack, but it made me think about some parts my car came with when i bought it.
It's a manual steering car, but the guy had started gathering parts to convert to P.S.. Told me these were special for 440-6 cars with the attached cooler.
What do ya'll think? I'm probably staying with the manual..this stuff worth much?
or better yet..are they right for my car?

Same brakets, pump and cooler as mine, could very well be. Here is a picture of an actual AAR car and they look the same.

Sorry the pulley looked backwards compared to the offset on my car, I should have looked closer at the center of the pulley.  Glad you figured it out.
