Rack and Pinion for E bodys
« on: April 05, 2006 - 11:03:11 AM »
This company, Unisteer claimed a SEMA this year that they will have a bolt in Rack & Pinion conversion for B/E-Bodys. Has anyone come accross another company building Rack&Pinion conversions?

Here's a link to Reilly's Alter-K-tion K member. That was shown on Spike TV's Muscle Car show. It uses a rack and pinion but isn't just a rack and pinion upgrade for a standard K member.  I saw a pinto rack on a Cuda once. It was in the rear of the K frame and had the lower ball joints flipped to point frontward. They sort of opened up the rear of it and had it mounted through the center. The rack has to be mounted at the correct height and be shortened or lengthened the correct length as to not cause any bump steer during suspension travel. The stock drag link would be a good measuring point. Try to find a rack with the same inner tie rod width. This guy also had the engine pushed back a little for weight transfer so it didn't hit the rack.  Alot of work. Are you sure you want a rack?

I really like the AlterKtion kit, very well made. I'd like to put one on the Duster if/when money allows.

Have there been any Magnum Force vs AlterKtion discussions? I've only seen a couple of "Magnum Force is for racing" or "stay away from Magnum Force" comments here and there. Could anybody elaborate?

A gent put one on a 2nd Gen Charger and said it was very easy.  To me it sounded much like a bolt on and go.  Sounded like maybe a light mod was needed.

You could search the D-C.com board and see if you can find it.

The AlterKtion is pretty much a bolt on thing, I think you MAY have to drill a couple of holes for added support but that's about it.

As for the Magnum Force kit...The main complaints I've heard about it are,
1. It put's alot of stress on the stock upper shock mount so if you use one you might want to support this more so problems don't start up down the road.
 2. It sticks the front tires out farther than the original suspension, so your tires may hit the fender.
 3. Not all the bolt holes line up.
 4. More than a few Complaints of them sounding arrogant when you talk to them. I've actually seen this first hand too, many years ago at a car show when I was trying to talk to them about doing some work on my car.

I'd go with the AlterKtion kit, great product, great customer service.
