Another pet peeve...72-74 GTX. 71 VIN is RS. Last year, period. The confusion is the 440. GTX only had 426 and 440. Roadrunners with 440 engines are sometimes 'coined' as GTX cars, because in 74 (not sure about 73) the GTX will appear on the hood of 440 RR's. Sometimes called the 'GTX option'. It's still an RM code Roadrunner.

After 71, the GTX stopped being a seperate model, and became an optional package on Roadrunners.  Technically, they should be called "Roadrunner GTX", much the same as Rallye cars are called "Challenger Rallye" or "Charger Rallye" cars.  However, calling them a "GTX" is correct, just as much as calling a Challenger with the Rallye option a "Rallye".

That would be true if "Rallye" was actually a seperate line at one time. They weren't. Rallye is an option package. GTX was a line, not an option. While we are both correct, the RS code GTX stopped in 71...

The 1972 through 1974 "GTX" really falls through the cracks.  Unlike the Rallye package (A57) on Challengers and Chargers, there was no GTX package you could order.  The GTX trim was included when you ordered a 440 engine in a Road Runner.  The 1972 sales brochure mentions the availability of "GTX engines which include a 440 4-bbl. or 6-bbl. V-8 and special designations on sides and deck lid."

Now that this discussion has been started, what is the difference in performance, or look between the A57 340 with the Rallye and the regular 72-73 340 Challenger?  Now I am really confused.

As far as I know, you couldn't get a 340 without the Rallye package.

In 1972 and 1973 you could order the base Challenger with a 340 engine  The 340 engine option for the base model also included the heavy-duty Rallye suspension package, performance hood with scoops, and F70x14 whitewall tires.

On JS23 Rallye (1972) and A57 Rallye Package (1973) cars, you had a choice of the 318 standard or the 340 optional.  On the Rallye cars regardless of engine, you got the already mentioned heavy-duty supension, performance hood, and F70's.  The Rallye cars also had the Rallye instrument Cluster included (although that was an option on the base V8 cars).

The one thing that is unique to the Rallye cars is the bodyside louvers and tape stripes on the front quarter and door.

Can't say I've ever seen a 340 Non-Rallye car, but that would be cool. Pretty rare I would imagine.

My car is a little weird in that it's a '72 JS car but no bodyside louvers and tape stripe.  I thought maybe that it was because my '72 was an early production car (8/17/71) but I think it was because it was ordered with the body side mouldings so the louvers were deleted.

I dunno? ???  Maybe someone else has an idea?
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I believe the challenger non rallye does exist.  I currently own a 1973 Challenger JH23H3B......  The fenfer tag does not have the A57 pacpage if my memory is correct there is an B41 where the A57 is commonly seen on the rallye cars.
