Correct steering wheel for 1971 R/T Challenger?
« on: April 09, 2006 - 03:30:02 PM »
Well I thought I had this issued figured out but I recently talked to another 71 R/T Challenger owner and he had a different story.
I was under the impression the standard steering wheel on a 71 E-body was the 3 spoke woodgrain.
A fellow with a 71 R/T Challenger has the 2 spoke wheel (with the holes in the spokes) commonly found on the 72-74 E-bodies.
When I mentioned this to him he said he's been told his wheel was incorrect before.
He said when he restored his Challnger he researched the 2 spoke wheel that was in his Challenger.
He said he was told the 71 automatic cars had the 2 spoke wheels with the black plastic grip because the black plastic matched the black plastic on the factory slapstick "T" handle shifter.
He said the 4 speed cars had the 3 spoke woodgrain wheel to match the woodgrain pistol grip shifters.
I've never heard this reasoning before, I doubt it's correct but I'm certainly NOT the expert.
So what do you guys think???

Do you have a broadcast sheet for the car? If so, what are the S codes?

This is from the 1971 Dodge Models and prices salemans guide. No mention of limited availability based on other options for either steering wheel.

Oops, I mentioned options but not models

For the R/T, Challenger hard tops and convertibles the black wheel was not available, the wood grain wheel was standard.

For the Challenger Coupe ( Deputy ) the black wheel was standard and the wood grain wheel was not available.

My salesmans guide is a April 1, 1971 revision, so I am not sure if any earlier versions had different info?

T/Ake care,
Barry

I'm assuming when you say black wheel on the deputy model you mean the 3 spoke wheel with black rim instead of the woodgrain?
i'm guessing the 2 spoke black plastic wheel was not even listed in the options for 1971.

Look on the BS for a 19 T? under steering wheel. won't be there because that wheel was not produced until the '72 models.  Standard woodgrain is 04 TT rimblow is 20 TX.

Thanks for the info
As a sidenote I put my Challenger's original 3 spoke woodgrain steering wheel back on the car and removed the Tuff Wheel and took it for a spin around the block.
I now remember why I took it off in the first place.
The 3 spoke woodgrain wheel is HUGE!! driving my non power steering Challenger is like driving a schoolbus :22yikes:
Correct or not, the Tuff Wheel is going back on and the original 3 spoke woodgrain is resuming it's job of hanging on the wall in my garage.
