Console compartment.

Got a rookie, type question.. My first Challenger many years ago was auto on the tree. The Challenger I have now has a console. What is the compartment used for on the rear of the console by the back seat?

Seat belt holder

no seriously, it is used for the rear seat belts when they are not in use.

In the later years they were also used for ash trays (that is what my 74 is).

OK. I had heard the seat belt thing before but I guess I just can't see it. The seat belt with the buckle would sit inside of this? Anybody got a picture of this so I can see it in my head.

It's actually for the front seat belts.

Correction, my 71 originally a Gran Coupe, had seat belt holders in the rear of the center console also. Car was built 12/70.

Goofy hole. I hated that thing in my '70 so I temporarily put a later model, ash tray type in around '82. Always looked like someone broke the top off of the back.

It was a bloody stupid idea IMO.  The way Chrysler's interior was made it was only a matter of months before the fins in the console broke away. I'd prefer an ashtray and am quite surprised I didn't go for one over correctness...though, unless I'm in a car chase or on a date there will be no smoking in Lucy.

That has got to be the strangest thing I have ever seen. What probably should have been an ashtray turned into a seatbelt holder?

I originally had the slot, but went with the ashtray instead. At first I thought the slot was an 8-track tape holder. 
It's no small wonder that design didn't last long.

I really like having a place to put the seat belt...it's just automatic now to reach back there.  Here's some pics of ours Tropical...
