What's your tow vehicle?
« on: April 15, 2006 - 12:06:47 AM »
Hi kids -

I'm thinking of getting a Dodge Ram 1500 Rumble Bee shortbed regularcab with towing package, 4x4, auto trans, and 5.7 hemi (of course).  According to web info, that little guy can drag 8700 lbs!  I can't really believe that, but....  Would that thing safely pull a Cuda on a trailer without being squirrelly?  Or do they only intend for you to pull jetskis and stuff behind shortbox-shortcab trucks?  Look how stubby it is!  Would it swap ends on me with 4000lbs worth of Hamtramck steel dragging behind?

I know that a 2500 quad cab would do the trick, but geez that thing is so huge...

It's not like I'm planning on trailering my car (never!) but it would be a shame to buy a truck and have it be too small to pull the Cuda shell to and from media blasting etc...  Or drag home another project...

So how small a truck can I get away with?  What do y'all use for tugging mopars around?

We have a 2003 1500 Ram with the hemi.  We trailored the chally up to Carlisle last year on an open trailer.  The truck pulled like there was nothing behind it...great uphills.  We were very pleased.

Nice truck Laura. Lovvvve Rams, especially in black:bananasmi :ylsuper:

I don't have a "tow" vehicle but if I want to shift house or car parts the Jeep will do it, no worries.

Charlie,

I have a 99 Durango with the 318 and that puppy pulls like there is no tomorrow. I have had no problems towing the Cuda to all of its appointments.

My tow vehicle is a flat bed truck that AAA sends for me when I break down, it even comes with it's own driver.  :P

Of course the Hemi will pull anything but I would be concerned about the short wheelbase being stable enough.I recently bought a `97 2500 extra cab short bed but have yet to tow anything. The 3/4 ton truck with the 360 and longer wheelbase should tow very nice for me.

The 1500 Hemi has all the power you will need, but as i have experienced a longer wheel base is a whole lot safer!!!! I have done my share of towing and have seen a few bad endings. I tow with a brand X extend a cab. :puke: I wont post that pic because of the feedback i will get.  Id go extend a cab.

I used to tow with a 97 Ram 1500 SWB standard cab 4 X 4. I had at the time a 16 foot open deck trailer. Only had one instance of "instability" while towing, and that was my fault as i did not have the equalizer bars setup properly. A quick adjustment, and it was fine. If you are going to be pulling an open trailer, and you use common sense while towing with a set of equalizers and a sway control, you can get by with the shortbed. If you are buying new, I'd spring for the extra $$ for an extended cab, with the longer wheelbase. I now have a 2000 CTD 2500, as I'm pulling a 22 foot enclosed Haulmark.

As for trailers, I'd never go back to an open deck. And if you buy enclosed, get the jump door on the drivers siide so you can drive a car into the trailer, then open the door instead of having to climb out the window. I also had a winch plate installed, then installed a remote control winch myself.

Ok guys, don' laugh...I know its a Ferd.   :roflsmiley:

I bought this truck a year ago for work, haven't hauled any trailers but it has the towing package etc.. I haul a lot equipment in the box for work and its pretty good for the most part. But big hills and weight I notice a difference. I would say the hemi would pull circles around me, but I never drove one.   :dunno:  It has 10ft-lbs less torque but does say it should haul 9200lbs with the 3:73 gears I have.  :clueless:

OK no flaming here, lol.I almost bought a new dodge cummings but didnt want to spend that much for a weekend horse trailer/car towing rig.I had a 92 dodge diesel but needed 4x4 and extra cab so a year ago I bought a 95 f-250 4x4 powerstroke(I have always preferred the mid 90's body style and fit to the newer fords anyway.I paid 10.5k cash so i didnt have payments. The new fords I have driven dont seem to me to be put together as strong, but thats my opinon.Since i bought her I installed 4" turbo back exhaust, rancho 9000's and incab remote,12k winch with front and rear recievers,Pillar pod,and a handheld Edge Evolution programmer,I JUst use the tow setting and it will throw you back in the seat, the race setting will smoke all 4.It will jerk any size trailer up the steepest incline.SO buy a diesel if you can, either ford or dodge

The last pic is of me loading last of a bunch of viper parts in to my truck.  A tech at a dealership kept all the old take off parts for about 10 years..... I bought all he had!  So in the future if you need NOS viper parts, let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
