Preserving a buildsheet
« on: April 18, 2006 - 07:55:35 AM »
Found a buildsheet in my 73 Cuda under the springs in the rear seatback.Pretty good condition, some markings from the springs and a little wrinkled.Anyone have any thoughts on how to store it and maybe get the wrinkles out?

It's always wonderful to come across those broadcast sheets!  We bought a set of front bucket seats since our car came with camareo seats.  When we took them apart to reupholster, there was a broadcast sheet in there! It wasn't to our car, but I was really excited anyway....I still need to send that to Barry.

Anyway, I would put the broadcast sheet in a sheet protector and store it safely away.

Get a copy of it in a color copier quickly, then file the original.
I found one in my Cuda and it was so brittle that I threw it away.  It fell apart in my hands. You were lucky to have a usable one.

After you color copy it, go to a comic book store and buy 2 acid free backing boards and a comic bag the correct size.  Sandwich the sheet between the boards and put them in the bag, fold the flap over and tape shut.  Store in a cool dry place out of the sunlight.  Do whatever you like with the copy(s).

The previous owner thought he was doing me a favor by scotch taping all the pieces together...what a nightmare.  Luckily when disassembling the car for resto I found two more in a lot better shape that have been stored the right way.

I agree also, you can flatten it by pressing it in a large book, let it set a day or two. Make some color copies and put them in sheet protectors and place them back in the seat springs.

Avoid laminating originals in good condition at all costs.

If any one does find one in pieces, I can try and re-assemble it for you, just send it in and I will do my best. Sometimes if they are in multiple pieces laminating is the only option to hold all the little bits in the right place.

Barry

Keep in mind that's it's not the condition of a broadcast sheet that is important, it's the originallity and the information that they contain that counts. Since there are fakes out there now it's almost better if the thing is worn and torn, it's harder to fake authentic aging and deterioration than some people think. All that matters is that when it's pieced together it's readable. Laminating can alter the sheet and make it harder to detect fakeed up aging, etc. some unscrupulous individuals laminate fake sheets to hide small details that could give them away as fakes, this is one major reason why you don't want to laminate an original, it could make it appear that you are attempting to hide something.
