Looking at 72 Charger, need info.
« on: April 24, 2006 - 09:10:58 AM »
I found a nicely redone 72 Charger with a 440 that I'm interested in.
I'm mostly used to working on old Vettes and have learned the hard way that there are specific "lookout points" on vettes. The weak points of these old cars, ie. rust prone areas on the frame, rear suspension play, vacuum system, specific hard to find parts, etc.
Anyone have a list of about a half dozen items that almost everyone has problems with on theses cars?
I want to know before I buy. BTW, I'm less worried about numbers matching than about hidden problems and impossible to find parts.
Thanks.
Gary

Welcome to the board rdoact!  I would imagine that most mopars have the same issues...rust in the rear quarters, frame rails, around the rear windows, door sills/hinges, trunk and floors and in the engine bay behind the brake booster.  I'm not very familiar with 72 chargers, but many other members here may be.  You might want to also check out http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/ and ask there.

Welcome to the site!  As for your questions, Rev pretty much covered most of it.  As you may know, the '72-'74 E-bodies are quite similar to the 71+ B-bodies, so a lot of their areas that are rust prone are similar.  Besides the things Rev mentioned, you'll want to look below the battery tray section on the frame as sometimes that's rotted out, the left and right sides of the cowl/firewall where the front fenders cover up usually has some sort of rust issue as the water and leaves build up between the two pieces, be sure the torsion bar crossmember is sound, and I've also seen some cars that had the front rails rotted below the brake booster area as well as on the passenger side in about that same spot.  There may be a couple more places to check out, but that's about all I know of.
