Carl..Do they still call certain tourists "smurfs" in N.Z. ?

Smurfs? LMAO!  Not sure mate.....never heard them being called that before. 
Why would they call them "Smurfs"? Blue and white.....can't even get a guess in, maybe cold?

 Did you say back then that the Subaru was paddle shifted ?
 Curious , as this has never been a USA option.  But often we have to wait for the good stuff.

Nope, "kind of".....had the sequential gear select (+/-) on the gear selector and  (+/-) buttons on each side of the wheel, positioned at 9 and 3'Oclock. Lots of fun and you could make it sound exactly like the rally cars...with those small little backfires between shifts, like a mini machine gun sound, just had to over rev it by a couple of hundred.

 

This isn't my car but you can see the wheel shifters.

Not sure why, but that what they called 'em up around Pio-Pio in the '90's...
