radiator coolant recovery

My car does not seem to run hot (according to the gauge), but always seems to leave a small 1''- 2'' puddle on the floor after a putt around the neigborhood.

Questions:

1. did 1970 Challengers (440-6V) come with coolant recovery systems stock?

2. if so, any pics out there?

3. if not, how many of you add 'em? and where'd ya get 'em?

nothing from the factory
water wetter can help with heat transfer but basically don`t overfill it , it should have a bar visable under the filler neck , that is the max fill  line

How 'factory' is it under the hood? Are you looking for something stock, or would something aftermarket do the trick. As you can see, mines not very 'factory'  :lol: I have a Moroso recovery tank that holds a quart of fluid mounted next to the passenger side radiator tank. Pretty much out of sight unless you are looking for it. It does recover the fluid that is spit out of the radiator, as the radiator starts cooling back off it will suck what it spit out back in there  :cooldancing:

Your cap may not be sealing properly, allowing coolant to push up into the overflow nipple before the system even gets to operating pressure.

Option - lose the squirters and convert your washer bottle to a coolant recovery tank.

Air in the cooling system from keeping the upper tank less than full to the neck costs coolant capacity and can reduce cooling system performance. "Closed systems" were introduced in GM cars in the late 60s to improve cooling performance on air conditioned models, and although I think these were all crossflow applications, it still makes the system more efficient.

Converting the washer bottle is an interesting idea...not using it now. What modifications would I have to do to make it work?
 Does the hose have to go to the bottom of the reservoir?
How air tight does the tank need to be?

It actually should have some source of venting. My Moroso tank came with a small hole in the top for venting. Converting the washer bottle should be pretty easy.

My car came with a original overflow tank as you can see on the left. My washer bottle isn't in, in that picture there. It just basically needs the hole in the bottom to attach a hose to, that feeds to the radiator.

ok..oh yeah does it use a different type of rad cap? Presure rating?

As the posts above acknowledge, the washer bottle is perfect as a recovery/closed system coolant tank:
1) bottom nipple places coolant "head" on line to overflow nipple on tank neck, always keep bottle 1/4 full minimum.
2) 1/4" ID hose is a snug fit on both ends.
3) snap cap vents bottle, drill a small hole if yours doesn't have a one (some repops)
4) ample reservoir capacity for coolant system
5) best of all, it already mounts in the ideal spot!

I run a Totally Auto repop bottle, they make clear/white and yellow/aged versions. Note - I found the small amount of flashing on the bottom nipple from the mold parting line was enough to cause a micro-leak from the hose. A tough leak to chase down, but my suspicions were confirmed. She's liquid tight now..

Here's mine in front of the battery.     Mopars always puke even with a properly working cooling system. Expansion has to go somewhere.

I had an ugly aftermarket bottle mounted to the front of the core support. Looked bad so I found this.  From the front all you can see is the cap and it's 16 inches long and stainless. Interesting design, hose connector and vent come out the bottom, hidden
