Gear Vendors Info
« on: April 26, 2006 - 02:49:48 PM »

Although mine is not on the road, yet, I thought I would pass on some info I have learnt.
You can order your Gear Vendors unit in two types for the Torqueflite 727 & 904.

Type 1 = The standard GV unit.
Type 2 = Autoshift Sequencer unit.

Type 1 = The standard unit, has a switch that can be neatly placed in your console top or attached to the dash.
It has two modes: Auto and Manual.  When in auto mode with the car in [D] it will shift using the existing gears, 1-2-D and at a set mph (27) it will engage OD.

When you click the switch into Manual mode and select low gear, you are in full control.
Shift 1, 1st-O, 2nd, 2nd-O, 3rd and 3rd-O. (6-gears).
Problem is, the driver has to turn OD off once they shift into an existing gear, eg: from 1st over to 2nd, then click OD off manually ASAP after the car has engaged the set gear, get it wrong and you'll send your cars rpms into orbit! Not goo. Get it right and it still results in a delay and a "searching" of the gear. It is very hard to get it smooth and perfect.

Type 2 = The autoshift sequencer unit can not be used with the standard module.
It is one or the other. The autoshift sequencer is quite a bit different.

It is fully a manual shift system. There is no manual/auto modes so no switch, it's fully manual.
Instead of the standard OD units auto mode (1,2,3,OD) you place the car in [D] and the car will go through the existing gears 1, 2 and 3 but instead of the unit shifting for you, you click the OD in when you want.
Of course this will only engage when the rpms are ready, eg: You can't engage OD at 10mph. Instead of the auto/manual mode swicth you simply get a red and a green light to let you know when your in or out of OD.

For ultimate control and fun of splitting gears, you hit no switches or anything.....you simply select a low gear and the car is ready to go. 1st, 1st-O, 2nd, 2nd-O, 3rd and 3rd-O. It works exactly the same as it would in the standard GV unit except you don't need to select manual mode, as, there is no Auto/Manual switch. The car is ready at any time!

The autoshift sequencer has a major added bonus, the driver does not have to outshift the OD.
The autoshift sequencer sensors the drop in rpm as it is connected to the tacho rather than the speedo (like the standard unit) and shifts OD off between the shift. So, you drive off in 1st click OD on and are in 1st-O then use your shifter and shift into 2nd, when you do this the autoshift sequencer kicks OD out for you. Very clever.

With the autoshift sequencer there is no delay, no ugly "searching" noise, just smooth crisp 6-speed shifting.
I would HIGHLY recommend anyone buying this unit to invest an extra $450-USD and get the Autoshift sequencer.

Hope this helps others who are interested in buying the unit. (Glen, I'm looking your way)

Carl

So let me get this straight, you put this auto seq module into your 3 speed auto (727) and it will shift 6 gears worth of goodness?

For $450?

Wrong.  :grinno:

The Gear Vendors standard unit comes at around $2,200 US depending on vendor.
Add $450 US to upgrade to the Autoshift sequencer unit.

This was basically an update post from the other monster Gear Vendor thread.

You get 6-speeds to play with, both up and down.
You can also cruise with 4:10's but be running like you had 3:20's out back in OD.
The GV unit has a final drive ratio of 0.78:1

No worries Glen, make sure you talk them you want the Autoshift sequencer, and remind them.
You may end up with the normal module..... :-\

It won't be an easy install, you have to clear room in your tunnel (underside) to give the GV unit about 1" of clearance. We also had to bend one of our X-pipes, pipes to get it to clear the unit.
The X-Pipe gets pretty close, but we used this mess heat protector which will be 100% safe, we still have about 10mm gap which is close, but not close "concerning". You'll be fine with it......will you be installing it or a shop?

I'm not sure Jim, you may want to PM or email: tactransman he'll know.

TransGo kits are the best, many a trans guru will tell you the same. I run one, haven't tried it yet though.

Rebuild kits with stock Borg Warner Clutches are fine .Use Heavy Duty Kevlar Bands in the front and rear. TransGo Shift Kits are fine but if you want an aggressive shifting transmission you need to "tweak" the kit a little. Do the other upgrades in the Torqueflite Tips (especially the 3.8 lever and shim the rear servo)

Ok, don't laugh if this isn't right.

Thats $30 for the transgo kit? Which is a mod that will help the 727 shift harder (more like a stick car) however I can only imagine that this isn't a rebuild kit at all. Is this correct?

If this is correct, where can I get a solid rebuild kit that has everything I need, including, but it doesnt have to have instructions for a complete rebuild?

You are correct. The Trans-go shift kit is just something added on. I have one and love it.  Sorry I can't help you with a rebuild kit recommendation.

What kind of kit do you want? Stock , heavy duty , race.
What do you mean by a stick car, manual valve body or just chirp the tires in second? Torqueflite Tips part 2 tells you how to firm up second gear.

What are the differences between stock and heavy duty kits? My guess would be stock with a transgo kit?

Have a 73 340, they don't make crazy hp stock bu I hope to get it to 350-400 by the time I'm done.

Didn't these 727s push hemi torque stock?

You would need a stock rebuild kit. Would you want bushings, filter, all thrust washers ,both bands etc( in other words everything new) ?
Yes they did but they were a little heavier duty than your 340 727
