Small block Six Pack & Cam
« on: May 03, 2006 - 11:42:49 AM »
I have a 318 short block, .030 over, with 360 heads.  Compression is somewhere between 8.5 - 9.0.  Plan is to run a new six pak set-up.  Would a Direct Connection purple cam be good with this combo, or what other cam should be used?  This will be running with a 4-speed and 3.55 gears.   :working:

I thik I'd go for a split duration with a 112 centerline to help cranking comp.
10 degrees seperation should do it well.
What head and valve size?

Small block Six Pack & Cam sounds like a action movie from the '70s  :smokin:

What are you basing the 8.5 - 9.0 compression on ?  Is the engine rebuilt with aftermarket(non jobber) style pistons ?
Just asking because it affects optimal cylinder pressure for Cam selection.

The block, a '70 318, was bored .030 and fitted with stock compression pistons, which if memory serves is about 9.0 or 9.1 (??).  :dunno:  But it currently has 360 heads with the 2.02/1.88 valves, and the chambers are a little larger than those on the 318 heads, so I think compression dropped slightly ??  Maybe I'm wrong; not the first time !!     Also running headers and 2-1/2" pipes.

Sorry to bring "bad news", however, The commonly available, (for the last 10 yrs),"stock" compression, "rebuilder" style Pistons for the 318, with 360 heads and a composition head gasket, will yield closer to around 8.0;1 for compression ?

The problem here is that the 1970 comp. distance Piston for the 318(which was higher than later 318's), has not been available for over a decade. Unless they used a Keith Black piston, you most probably have very low compression.

Use a small camshaft. 340 replacement 'musclecar" cam from Comp. Cams maybe ?

Thanks for the info; very interesting   The block boring & new pistons were done in 1985 ( ;D; I know; it's been off the road a while...  :-[).  I could check w/ the shop; they are still in business.  But I'm not racing this thing; just want to add a little fun factor.  The AVS 4-bl on it now works great.  I have no idea what cam is in it right now.  But I don't want to have too much cam for the compression, cubes and valves currently in this motor.   :burnout:
