Well, as a few of you all know, I am getting a '72 Charger, the motor is a 400, but a 383 comes with it, and there a fresh 440 I can get with it for a little bit of an added cost, so here's the question, what do you all suggest the most...... Any questions, ask me, and I'll answer, I got it set to where you can only post poll once, so.... Here's what the guy has told me about the 440, he rebuilt it to turn some higher RPM's in an old truck with numericaly high gears over 4.10, and he still has it on the engine stand, plus he still hasn't put a cam in it yet, but the rest is done. Now this is all he's told me so far, we have not discussed any prices, so I don't know how much he wants for it, and I'm not sure what year it is, but it is a 440.... So, again, if you got any questions, ask me before you vote. The 4th option is, if you choose it, post a reply saying you choose other, and let me know what you think, sorry no cross breeding (Chivy/Mopar, Ford/Mopar, none of that #$WQ%&%^#, you know what I mean...)

I guess the big issue here is how deep your pockets are, and what your goal is. You can stroke that 400 to be a mean engine. Nothing wrong with a 383. The cam choice on that 440 would be as to how you plan on driving this car. Do you know what heads are on it, and if they have been ported or not? Of all your choices, you can't go wrong here, but how do you plan on driving this car? Just street, or occasional track, or all track?

Does the 400 run?  I am guessing no and even if it did it is probably a bit anemic because it is a low comp detuned motor for that year so it won't have that much balls.

Sooo if what your sayin a 440 can be had for relatively little effort than I would say get the 440.  All of the mods are the same and as the saying goes "there's no replacement for displacement...."

Given that you will be spending serious $ to build the 383 or 400(I'M a little confused as to what motor your getting w/car) I suppose use that $ to buy the 440.

Years ago I looked at buying a 72 or 73  Charger with a 400 in it. It hardly went any better than my 73 Charger with a 318 in it. Unless that 400 has been seriously re-built, with all kind of go-fast goodies, put in the 440 ( assuming the 440 is still one of the good ones ).

When you're dealing with an engine that someone else built, it's a crap shoot.  Is it a steel crank, was the rotating assembly balanced, internal, external, with the balancer and flex or flywheel, are they new pistons, or did he just do a ring job, If it was bored, did they use a torque plate? Did they bore each cylinder to match each individual piston? Was the crank ever dropped? Was the block boiled? Are there new cam bearings installed? Were the plugs pulled when the block was boiled?  Were the rods Mag checked? Are there new rod bolts?  Etc. Etc.Etc.Etc.Etc.Etc.........

Unless you know the Machine shop that did the work, or can verify everything that was done to the block with receipts, If it's a late 60s/early 70s ribbed block with a steel crank, I'd offer him $300.   Then you would still have to have it checked out and balanced again.    It costs too much to put an engine in twice.

We had guys here selling 3 complete pulled cast crank 440s with 727s with all front bolted accessories and brackets, running for $300 a piece.

 :iagree:  Unless the motor is extremely clean and it comes with a stack of receipts, or you know the owner well and trust him I would trust the rebuild. 

One person's idea of a rebuild is not anothers. 

Remember that the primary reasons for a person selling is that it either has a problem with it or they are forced to due to room, money, wife, etc.  Very few people sell cars because they are bored of it or they have a good heart.

From the choices given I vote the 440.

If you choose "other", cross breed the 440 crank into the 400 block to yield a 451. Gives more Power and Torque than everything else, including the 440, and the nicer fitment of the lowdeck blocks.

Jeeze it's been a little while since I checked in. OK, here's the thing. The car has the 383 in it now, needs rebuild because of bad blow by. I'm not sure what the 400 is like, but the guy said if I want it (for a 400 block motor in a 400 car.....) then he would just throw the motor in the deal. Now as for the 440, I saw it today, but didn't write down any of the info, as far as #'s.... He did say it's been bored .030 over, all new bearings and rings. He said if I want it, he'll throw it in for however much, we have not decided on a price as of yet. He did say if I want them, he's got a pair of block hugger headers for the 440. He's selling the 440 on the side to make room. He's selling the car because he's got too many projects. The 400 is being thrown in, if wanted, for closer #'s matching.....

First, get the 440 checked out to be sure its okay. Then I'd sell all the other stuff and put the money into the 440. Get it bored and stroked. You can get a kit from 440 source or PAW for pretty cheap. You should be able to pull at least 450 horse out of it if thats what you're looking for.  :eek2:


Now on the other hand if you want to drive the car and get decent mileage go with the 383.

Hmmmmmmmmm...... crazy idea here, lets see, which ever motor fits the best, 383/400/440, into a '79 Aspen??? Hmmmmmm...... I don't know though, I would like to run the 440 in the Charger, but it will be more street driven than anything, but I do want it to be slightly modified, but nothing radical...... I like my old Charger I had.... 69 with 440, .030 over, "509" cam, Holley street dom intake with Speed Demon 750 carb...... And double roller billet timing chain set from Summit..... And Mopar Performances electronic ign conversion kit.
