Vibration - driveshaft???
« on: April 01, 2003 - 03:16:17 PM »
I have a 73 340 cuda with a 727. It is mainly stock except for headers. I have a vibration that I cant locate. I have had the tires balanced and nothing changed. It actually feels like it might be in the drivetrain somewhere. Here is whats happening. No vibration at idle or low speeds, or when I give it gas in park. I get to about 30mph and I can feel it starting, and it increases with speed. It is also not constant. Its more like its in and out. It rises and falls, with about 2 cycles per second at 50mph. I also replaced the u-joints, no change. I did notice that the drive shaft has a small dent/ding in the center. Could this small dent cause it to be out of balance? That is my guy feeling but I want to get some opinions before pulling it and heading to the drivetrain shop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I won`t garranty that is the problem but there is a good possibilty , you can balance it yuoself by using a worm hose clamp on the shaft & try different positions to see if it helps

I think it's worth the trouble. Not only should you have it checked for balance but also for straightness. If it has a dent in it, you have to figure on how the dent could have got there and what damage it could have caused.

If it has any dent in it that you can see, then start looking for another shaft.  You probably cant fix that one.
