71 Cuda Steering wheel back and forth play...
« on: May 04, 2006 - 01:39:25 AM »
This should be an easy one... I hope  :cooldancing:  On the Cuda steering column it moves in and out about an inch when you push/pull on the steering wheel. What part could be damaged to allow that to happen. I don't think its suppose to be a telescoping wheel

Does it move just behind the crumple can?  If so there is a nut in there you can tighten... not sure if that would be it becasue it is pressed on real good.  If the complete column moves all at the same time, check just under the dash and you will see 2 bolts where the column bolts to the underside of the dash.  When loose there is about 1" of play there.  If it's not in those places, check the pin right in front of the steering box (under the hood).  The steering column goes in to a little box that is pinned to the steering box.  See if the pin is missing.  Let me know and I can post some pictures if needed.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Mine does the same thing. As long as I have that pin on the end of it, I know it won't ever come out. So I really haven't tried to figure out why it's like that. Maybe someday...  :-\

the bearing has a snap ring above it in the bearing housing that should prevent movement , also the bearing housing is held by 3 screws that should be tight , this is where I would look first

Chryco is always right. Pull the wheel off (with a puller), and look at the shaft below the splines. That snap ring isn't in the groove anymore.  Pull it off, give it a squeeze with a pair of pliers to tighten it up.then install it with the rounded edge down and the flat/sharp edge up, in the groove, while pulling the shaft towards you.

Thanks guys. I'll have to give it a look. I thought the problem might have been at the other end somewhere in the engine compartment. I'll let you know later.

Romper, domper, stomper, doo.  :banghead:

I had a fact finding mission. I know the first pic is blurry, but I moved the rubber ring that was around the bearing to show it was in place, along with the snap ring. This was done with the steering column pulled as far out as possible(an inch too far to be right).

What I have found out is that the play is in the coupler. In the second picture, you can see a hole in the steering shaft. What it that? There is a metal thing there on the shaft that looks like it should fit onto the coupler, but I don't see that solving my problem. This isn't a big deal, as I never looked into until now, but it's an interesting problem.  :clueless:

A lot of good information here. Thank you. I was busy today and just got the chance to pull up the website. I'm going to go pull the wheel and take a look at parts.

Guys,  The steering column shaft should not pull in and out of the column housing more than an 1/8 of an inch movement.  The coupler has nothing to do with your problem Mike.  You need to find out why yours is moving that much.  The only thing I see that you need on your coupler is the rubber seal and the seal lock plate.  Don't worry about that little hole on there either. Push and pull anybody's elses column and you'll see that yours is missing something.

Rob is right... it should be like that.  I would have someone push and pull the steering whell and column and have another person watch to see if they can tell where it is loose.
