Prowler, The fusible link doesn't come on the battery cables. You changed the wire from the starter relay to the starter and it worked?

The fuseable link doesn't go to the starter, nor is it on your battery cable. Maybe you just had a loose connection? In this picture, you can see a large black tape covered wire running from the "+" cable, down to my starter. There is a smaller red cable running to the starter relay. On the other side of the relay is a blue wire. That wire is the fuseable link. It runs to your bulkhead connection. The starter is the only thing that does not get power that goes thru the fuseable link.

MEKRunner believe it or not I don't have a blue wire like that. I will post some photos up soon to give you guys a better idea. Okay so I'm wrong again. But, yes changing that wire from the starter to the relay. :sly:

Okay guys got some pictures. I looked again and no blue wire. Hopefully this helps explain what I have on my car a little better. The brown/tan wire you see is what I changed.

In the first pic. the red wire that has a yellow crimp to the red wire that comes form the harness should be a fuseable-link. Appears someone replaced the link w/wire. DANGER! this is the last line of defense for your electrical system. I suppose a burned out link is not the problem though.

Well, like I said I went ahead and dropped the check for a new engine harness. So, hopefully that should have the blue wire. I ordered it from Evans Wiring. Thanks though, it makes a lot more sense and now I know what else has been replaced too.

The fuseable link isn't part of the engine wiring harness. It's part of the "front" harness that includes the headlights, and the front turn signals and side marker lights.

Well now that you put it that MEK that would explain why my turn signals don't work right. Besides I'm planning on getting the headlight and other harnesses as well. Sorry to sound like an idiot but, this stuff is all new to me and trying to figure out what the past owners did can be a challenge.

It's easy to assume the fuseable link would be part of the engine harness, but it's not. I replaced my front harness because I had trouble with the side marker lights. That's how I know the fuseable linkage is in there. At first, I looked at it and went  :clueless:  :clueless:  :clueless: But that's how they did it back then.

Yeah, it's fairly easy but, thanks for clearing this up for me. I just ordered my headlight harness as well so it will be getting that in addition to a new engine harness. Anyways, let me ask you guys something else, let's say the fusible link goes bad then how do you go about replacing it?

Back in the day you just bought a new one & pluged it in, there are probably reproductions available, but you can create a new one with some crimp on terminals & bulk link like this at Advance Auto Parts.

Paddock's got repro fusible links - just bought 1 for my Challenger couple weeks ago.

Good advice!  Disconect battery when you're not with the car, until you get the wiring straight.  I've seen the setup you have, fusible link replaced by wire, melt wire harnesses and burn some good mopars to the ground!  We wouldn't want that!!!

Thanks guys. I usually disconnect the battery anyways for that reason and other ones knowing what I know now. Besides that the car hasn't been driven but, only a handful of times since I've had it the past year. Now, it won't be driven because I took out the radiator yesterday and apparently the tranny cooler is built into the radiator. so it does't have a tranny cooler or radiator at this point. Those will be coming soon.
