My Car's Dead
« on: May 06, 2006 - 06:52:12 AM »
Okay so the other day I'm trying to rewire my car. Anyways, the previous owner or guy before him had made a mess of the car's wiring. Now, I'm trying to put it to the way it should be. Well anyways, I grounded a wire that I thought was a ground wire but, should of been on the starter relay on the s-terminal. Everything else was there except another read wire that has been spliced in and not sure what the heck it even does? Anyways, I start the car up and the ammeter is going crazy. I let it run just for a few seconds. Then, I shut it off.
I disconnect the battery cables and come back in a day. I go to hook up the battery cables and I open the door. I notice I don't have an interior dome light funny I say. Anyways, I stick the key in the ignition and turn to the on position. Still got nothing so I'm like what the heck. Now, I check the battery it and was around 11.8 volts so it's somewhat good. I check the fuses and they're all good. I replaced the starter relay. Tried another voltage regulator and got nothing. I don't see any melting or scoring on the wire but, I'm wondering if its just my amp gauge decided to go bye bye and that's why I've got nothing? Someone please help.  :feedback: :1zhelp:

have you checked the fuseable link. 6" long blue wire, at the starter relay?

Okay now that you mention it does it run from the starter to the relay? Just curious.

I shorted out the volt-meter on a Duster once & blew my fuseable link.

Okay, so correct me on this. The wire that runs from the starter relay to the starter on the positive battery cable is the fusible link correct?

On my'73 the smaller wire from the pos. battery term. goes to the big bolt on the relay, from there another wire, which starts out as the blue fuseable-link and plugs into a red wire that runs to the bulkhead connector on the firewall. I believe from there it goes thru the amp-meter back out to the Alternator. There was another post recently dealing w/rewiring around the volt-meter that had a schematic of this.

Here is a simple schematic drawing.  Sorry I can't draw too well with paint.
pierce past it with a test light and see if it's open, if not, keep going into the connectors on the firewall on both sides.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Ha ha.   very funny.    Kinda shaky drawing with the touch pad on my laptop, isn't it?   We need more drawings. We try to explain things and the reader always sees something else.   Let's see everyone's artwork.

Well I hooked up the old fusible link that looks old but it worked. I got my power back so now I know not to buy anymore repop positive battery cables with the fusible link built in. And yes, it is the wire that runs from the starter relay to the starter I replaced and it worked.
