Cracked flexplate
« on: May 08, 2006 - 08:09:08 AM »
I replaced my bolts on my flexplate (http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=20689.0), only to see that my flexplate was cracked.

I am guessing that since two of the bolts on the flexplate were loose, that means all the force was placed on the remaining two bolts, which caused it to crack.

1) Is there a stronger flexplate you can use to replace the original?
2) I am guessing there is no way around it, you HAVE to drop the transmission to replace it, right?

I hate that -a $70 part, but about 56 hours of labor.....

7Yr, Before you start, get a rolling tranny jack from Harbor Freight for $49. It straps around the tranny and tilts a little.  After you unbolt the 4 flex-plate bolts, bolt a small box end angled wrench to one of those lower cover bolt holes, and tighten it up against the converter. It'll hold your torque converter all the way in your front pump while you pull the tranny away from the engine.   Now after unbolting the the tranny, driveshaft and linkage, you can roll the trans just back far enough to change that plate, then slide it back together.  Should only take about 4 hours max, but watch out for tranny fluid dumping out of the tailshaft and filler tube hole. (this would be a good time to drop the pan and add a drain plug)
