Track Night Tomorrow Night, Lets hear...... UPDATED
« on: May 09, 2006 - 12:17:03 PM »
Any guesstimations?

Here's what i got. Its a 1972 Fully Loaded Barracuda..daily driver. Here are the specs on it. Weight of the car with me in it we figured to be 3550lbs..thats within 10lbs or so im sure.

Motor
318 - .030over
Comp Cam - .480 lift, 280 Duration
Stock 2.02 J-Heads, 3angle valve job, and the deck has been milled for CR
Eddie Performer RPM intake with a 650cfm Thunder AVS
Dynomax Ceramic Coated headers feeding into 3" Cutouts, or 3" Flowmaster Super 40's
Stock recurved distributor, MSD 6A, Heli-Core wires, Blaster coil...timing comes in fast since i run it off manifold vacuum as well  :grinyes: For some reason this motor loves some timin
Running a electric fan with a manual shutoff for the track

Trans
Rebuilt 904
3000rpm Stall
Low Gear Set
TransGo TF-2 Shift kit - chirps 3rd  :bigshades:

Rear
8 3/4"
Rebuilt Clutch Suregrip
Richmond 3.91s

Tires/Suspension
275/60/15 Cooper Cobras
My weak point....air shocks with tired leaf springs
MP adjustable pinion snubber

Last outing the D/A was 3600feet and it rana 14.3@95mph spinning off the line...

The clutch fan has been replaced with a electric, i've tuned it a little better, pinion snubber added...and a little more confidence that i can run faster is what's changed since last time. First run i did last time was a 14.6, then a 14.5, then a 14.3. I really need to get it to hook up.

If i can hook, I'd be happy witha 13.8 which i think is do-able.

So. what do ya think I'll do?  :drunk:

I'll go 14.20's... I think the cam is kind of mild to see 13's. I bet a tuned 750 Demon get you there.

Can't wait to hear what u get from the set up. I think you're very close now. Low 14's r very respectable w/ a 318 w/o porting the heads. Get those heads ported and a 292° > 500 lift.. = low to mid 13's

Well it ran 14.30 with doing nothing different from the 14.6 but launching at a higher rpm. I spun a good amount on that last 14.3...so i think with traction and a decent whole shot i should do better. It's tuned better and i did notice it rev a little quicker losing that big ol clutch fan i had on there which can't hurt.

Of course this is the armchair racing thread lol, but I'm going there planning on cracking 13s, ill be disappointed if i dont, and that just means ill spend more money somewhere lol  :icon16:

we shall know soon enough

I'll give you a 13.9 with good air. Load that converter as hard as you can without pushing you through the lights. Take everything out of the car you don't need. Make sure you are running the highest octane you can reasonably get and the most timing advance without spark knock.Good Luck , have fun and most of all be careful.

That was exactly what I thought as soon as I finished reading the post . . then . . dammn 71hemi already said it!  With some fine tuning, you should be able to reach the 13's.  Good luck!

Ok, now i've heard two things on loading the converter up. Some people tell me the small blocks with not much torque should flash the converter off say 1500rpm or so. some say like you, give it hell at the light. i ran the 14.3 with the coverter loaded to about 3000rpm  :burnout:

I agree on the carb could be upped to a little more race friendly carb such as a demon. However, I'm running it verrryy close to how i drive it daily. I'll be able to leave the track, park it in the garage and head to work in the morning. Only thing i might do is just lose the power steering belt...maybe, its a PAIN to go around the water, back up, burnout and such with that little sterring wheel and a power steering setup  I love how my eddie is on daily basis  :dogpile:

Thanks guys, keep 'emcomin  :clapping:

You can also clamp the front half of your leaf springs with two  homemade brackets per side to help traction. :burnout:

what are your 60 foot times and trap speed like? Dropping the rear tire pressure could help you out with the 60 foot times if they're not that good. I had some good 60 foot times with radial T/A's at 19-20psi (1.83)

70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

If you set the snubber and pinion angle right, and you have some better traction, your best times will be leaving off idle, and letting the convertor flash to it's stall speed. Think of the engine as a big flywheel. When you spin it to 3K, then let off, the convertor and realease of the brakes "buffer" the hit a little. You are up in the power band, but only the torque produced will get it moving. If you leave off idle, the engine has momentum in addition to the torque output, plus your brakes are fully off when the rpms come up. This helps to get things moving. But, you have to be able to stick the tires. Also, the fan loss gives a little, but if you run 14.1 or 14.0, pull the PS belt for a run. You'll hit 13s definately. That frees up a lot of power (parasitic loss is fairly high for PS..20-30hp at speed)  Also, max the air pressure in the front tires, and if you can, remove the end links from the sway bar in the front. Keep after it..It will run what you want..just not too much more.

I disagree with this. Loading the convertor as hard as you can is just going to create a ton of heat and kill his convertor eventually. You just want to load the convertor enough to get the suspenion up a little bit.  If you laod the convertor real hard is going to get the suspenion up and cause the car to bounce out of the hole.  I would try leaving on the convertor and also leaving close to idle.  You can also try short shifting 2nd . I bet you get it in the 13's. Good luck dude!

:iagree: As long as the engine is well tuned I agree with you but if it is not usually this is the best way to get the best ET.You do not want to hold the converter tight too long or you will create a ton of heat. :grinyes:
