540 BB Mopar

Just in case anybody Races, this is a nice 540 we just did. Gonna try and do a "street version" for pump fuel later, but this was a "new build" for a customer using his "old Block" and Heads, with new bigger 540 rotating assembly.

Mopar mega Block
4.375 Bore
4.250 " stroke Ohio crank, 2.200 Cheb Pin
7.100" BME rods W/.990"
J.E. Forged Pistons
INDY 440-1 Heads 2.19/1.81 valves
Maxed out port Job, Installed port intruders but NO WELDING.
Hughes Flat-Tappet Solid Camshaft W/.685" lift
Tunnel ram 2 X 4 Ron's Toilets

Targeted as a real nice Bracket motor using a 2 spd "slip & slide" in a light car. Used the solid flat tappet to maintain low maintenance and longevity. The guy does laps at many tracks, hence No Roller Cam. I knew going in the  2.19 intake valve would be a limiting factor on this size engine for flow, hence the 7.100 BME's to try and carry the head.

Dyno'd at an Independant Dyno Service we use called Dyno Plus Services, High river, Alberta canada. This Engines sheets will be up on the site soon, when Pierre, the owner finds time.

894 Horsepower @ 6800 rpm
760 ft/lbs @ 5600 rpm
Interesting to note, the Torque curve passes 750 ft/lbs @ 5000 rpm, and stays above 700 ft/lbs right to 6800 rpm !

Update, the 540 is running fantastic ! plus 70 pulls so far, 1 N.H.R.A. "wally" already this season, very strong and consistent @ 8.10's/ 163 mph. The thing fly's, doesn't screw up it's valve lash, only occasional checks, basically running maintenance free.
Trick here seems to be keeping the cam profile/spring pressures relatively sane on the flat tappet solid cam. Really Nice Engine, very Reliable, Great Power.

Curious FC, what does "max ported" equal on your bench? I'm guessing the intruders fill the lower 1/3, and you raised the port a bit? Any pics? I'd be curious what a "short rod" version would do with the same heads seeing the hp number and the "low" torque figure. (not bashing, I mean low peak tq rpm) I like the idea of no roller for ease of maintenance.

Which -1 heads does that engine have?  I have a set waiting to go on an not-yet-built 517 lowdeck.  The combo is to be a 4.15 lowdeck mains crank offset ground to 4.300 with .400" longer-than-stock big block chevy rods in a semi-concreted 400 block.  I bought the bigger of the two cnc'd -1's.  I take it you have the smaller heads, since your intakes are 2.19's?

If so, that's encouraging, since your engine is making so much power.  Mine will be a pump gas motor with race gas when getting sprayed.  I'm hoping to end up with a low maintenance deal like yours.  I suspect I maybe should have gotten the smaller heads, but I figured if I ever stepped up to a mega or indymaxx block that I'd have the heads needed to support a pretty big motor.  In the meantime, the nitrous could take advantage of the heads on the little motor.

Could you explain what you mean by that - I don't quite follow.......

Well wonderful, but I would add that a 540 out runs and out lasts a 572 in any brand for some reason. And if I'm over 650 hp, I always go roller cam.

Me too...   :grinyes:   The big deal with solid rollers and the supposed longevity issue boils down to one thing:   Staying on top of the valve lash.  If you stay on it and keep everything set correctly, a roller will last for a very long time with no issues....     :2cents:
