I wish that I had that luck.  My Daytona was 2300 lbs, but I hit it with a brake and had the 2-step held at 4000 at the line. 33x17.5x15 Pro-stock Eagles.  The 8-3/4 didn't have a chance.  After I put the dana in it, it held up for 8 years till I sold it. I found it in National Dragster Classifieds, out of an Alcohol funny car, for $600.  Narrowed, spool, axles, blown gears.

the ford has a much higher angle between the gears so it eats up a ton of HP try pushing any car at a race track , if 1 guy is pushing it easily it has a Mopar diff, But if 5 guys are pushing it & breaking a sweat doing so it has the ford

That's a great way to put it Chryco. I just wish that DANA had a drop out pig like the 8-3/4.   It doesn't matter to me anymore. I have 8-3/4s in all of my e-bodies.

Newbie here who's never opened a rear end before, so here goes a question:

Dana's have quick access rear covers, right?

I could've sworn someone told me those are easier, that you don't have to pull the axles apart to get to the ring and pinion, you just open the cover, watch your hands for scrapes, undo a few bolts or something simple, yank the ring and pinion, replace it, and go on your way.  Isn't that easier than a pumpkin and moving axles?

The only thing quick about a dana is the inspection cover to look inside.
It's just the gear setup that makes it harder. If you want to do it on the bench, The whole dana housing has to come out. To do an 8-3/4, you can have complete pumkins setup with different gears, ready if you blow a set.  Pulling an 8-3/4 "PIG" can take 10 minutes if you have an air-impact wrench. You only have to pull the axles out 3" on each side.

Thanks guys, just thinking ahead, sounds like I'll stick with a 8 3/4 with a couple 489's on hand, just in case.  Cheers.

No matter what rear you run, you HAVE to pull the axles out.  The axles run into the differential which the ring gear is bolted to.  You can't pull the diff out w/o sliding the axles out no matter what.
