Don't yell at me.
« on: May 14, 2006 - 03:47:21 AM »
Please don't totally ignore this one. But I'm not a member of any other car sites and don't have the time to research a good Ford F250 site. So, I am begging for some understanding and answers here. Besides my '74' Challenger (thought I'd better throw that in) I have an old beater '84' F250 2-wheel drive I use for going to the dump and hauling the camper with. There is a howling sound coming from the passenger rear side. When the truck is parked and I pull and push the truck from side to side very hard I can see the wheel/drum assy. moving in and out from the backing plate about 1/4". And I'm sure this is what is causing the sound I hear. I've heard that some of the rear axle assys. had some kind of pre-load or axle adjustment and am wondering if it isn't simply loose. Or, the bearings and or races are totally worn away. I've been driving it this way for about a year now, it has recently gotten worse. I am hoping to get a few good ideas before I get home from a business trip.
Thanks abunch, sorry this wasn't a Mopar question.

My guess would be an axle bearing. Not sure what type of bearing set up Ford uses but pull the axle and you should be able to tell right away. And oh yeah..

I have no knowledge about Ford trucks, but the first thing that popped into my mind was the wheel bearings. Have you pulled the wheel yet to look for anything obvious?

Hey, I said don't yell at me. I'm pretty sure you guys are right, it's most likely an axle bearing. But I've been driving on it this way for over a year now. Expect the worst and hope for the best, right?
