Shaker hood
« on: May 17, 2006 - 05:36:22 PM »
Being new at all this I would like to understand more about the SHAKER Hood. Was it simply an option? Did it only come with certain engine combos? Obviously you wouldn't get a shaker with a slant 6......right? Could somebody please fill a newbie in on some general guidelines? From what I understand it is a valuable option, and I usually associate it with the 426 hemi. How about a little info? Thanks in advance!

As far as I know it was an option in '70 and '71 on 440 6PAK and 426 Hemi cars.

It was an option for 70/71 Cudas(340-4, 383-4, 440-4, 440+6, 426 Hemi), 70 R/Ts(383-4, 440-4, 440+6, 426 Hemi) and 71 R/Ts (340-4, 383-4, 440-4, 440+6, 426 Hemi). I think it was standard on Hemi Cudas and maybe 440+6s, but Im not sure.

Standard for all Hemi Cudas. Not avalable on 70 340 in late 70ds, 69 build cars and early 70ds ok.

They discontinued the the option on the 340 in mid 1970.

For Cuda's.. it was a $38 option for the 340 and all RB engines. However, it was std on any Hemi engine.. and NO A/C.

Cudahob.. are you talking about challengers??  I have a real 71 "340" shaker cuda.. documented N96 car. I'm probably not clear on that statement, because there are 340 shaker cudas.

Well since we're on the subject..

I'm restoring a 71' Barracuda convertible that presently has a flat hood.  I've got a shaker hood w/trim ring that my brother threw in when I bought a different car from him, it is a reproduction he said he bought from a guy in Ohio about 15 years ago still in the crate.

My question is what other parts do I need to make it functional?  I spoke with YearOne but they were at best helpful and at worst confused, I couldn't get a straight answer on a complete parts list that was needed.  I'm trying to figure out if the necessary parts are going to cost an additional $800.00 or $1,800.00 and where is the best place to get them.  I'm surprises that YearOne doesn't have a package for a complete shaker assembly system, I'm guessing that most people that buy the shaker parts are doing a new build and need everything.  This is going to be a single Speed Demon carb on a stroked 360.

Any help.

Just something I read in a Mopar book. Half the year they did it, half the year they didn't.
If I find a late 70 340 `Cuda like mine with a N96 code, then obviously the book is wrong.

There isn't a SINGLE book written (including Galens White Books) that don't have mistakes in them, It's sad but true. If you want to get the facts straight on any obscure details it's best to speak with a few experienced restorers or OEM judges to get the facts before moving forward on a Mopar restoration. The car itself is usually your best "history book" if it's still intact and original, there were allot of things that varied from one car to the next even cars built at the same plant on the same day.

Shaker hood production history is not completely known, allot of guesswork on the subject. Each Shaker car needs to be researched on it's own to really get to the bottom of it. The only car you can be 100% sure should have a Shaker Hood is a 1970 or 1971 Hemi Cuda, they ALL should have come with one as standard equipment. They were optional equipment on any other car they came on.
