Installing Hemi on my 71 clone and want to ask if there is an easy way to go about it. Never installed an engine this big and wondered what has worked and what has not. For instance drop trans tilt engine in with engine tilter and slide trans on? Also should I have torque converter mounted to flexplate or install after you have everything lined up. I would think this is tougher, but what about clearing the cowl from EVERYTHING (trans enghine converter). Should I get car up in both front and back for more ground clearence (clarence)? I only want to do this once and wanted your good and bad stories to help

Is it feasable for you to drop the body onto the engine with the K member, trans and cross member already on? That would be the best bet I would think.

That is an option, but I woul dhave to take apart the entire front suspension. If that is the only way then it will have to be. I have never doen it this way buit know that Hurst Hemi Darts are done similar. Trying to avoid the extra work and get it on teh road, but you guys know best!

If your engine compartment is freshly painted, then I would see too much risk on damaging the paint on putting it in from above. Not worth the risk.  :2cents:

I have not installed one but I believe you can get-r-done either way.  Definitely remember to have you camera ready!   :wave:

considering it i sonly 4 K frame bolts , split the 2 upper ball joints & slide back the T bars to drop the front suspension Oh & maybe disconnect the steering column if it is in place , to install from the bottom I would be all over doing it that way , it is so much easier & cleaner to do

Tried it the hard way. I have the engine in place but trans needs to come up on a steep angle to match up with converter. Car needs to be higher off the ground to do this. Hemi can tilt back a little but center link stops it from really coming back. I think I may go to coming up from bottom with K frame off car as you guys say. Any other suggestions?

If you want to protect your new firewall paint, Just put the flexplate on and drop the engine in by itself with the headers in the engine compartment loose. Straight down.    Then lock the  converter into the 727 and attach it from underneath.   

If you are luck enough to have a frame lift, then have everything on the K-frame and lower the car onto it.

I have a cheap $49 dollar rolling trans jack from Harbor Freight and can install Autos fairly quickly and 4speeds a tiny bit longer.

Never ever bolt the converter to the flex plate first.
Always stick it in the transmission pump. :cheers:

So if i put TC in pump would you just go from the top? I will obviously have more clearence.

If you put the converter on the flex plate first it is very very hard to get the converter to go into the pump all the way. You will destroy the pump if it is not in all the way. This is the number one mistake of customers at my shop when I do a bench job for them. This is a paper that everyone that I do a bench job for gets put in their hand when they pick up their transmission :thumbsup:

It sounds like it's all ready in. But, a few notes..a tthe start, tkae the flexplate and lay it over the torque convertor, in the same orientation as it is on the engine. (indented side towards you...) then, line up the flex plate to convertor holes. When they all line up, take some sray bomb paint, and go accross on ear of the flexplate and convertor. The mark and shadow this leave means when the motor is in, and the convertor seated in the trans, you have to only tighten the bolts, not search for the right orientation, then tighten. They only go together one way. Next, you attach the flex to the crank, and torque it to spec. Then, you seat the convertor, and just like the diagram, it has to be "in" all the way, or you'll break off the pump drive luggs. If the motor is in, and the convertor is still bolted to it, and the trans is in the car already, then pull the motor, and do it like I said. You'll cost a bunch of effort and $$ to fix the trans afterward if you dont. I dont know of a soul who could ever get the convertor all the way in with it still on the engine. From the bottom, with the exh, trans, and suspesion is the best way, but you're beyond that from the sound of it.

Thanks for the info. Well the engine is in sort of. I have it on mounts and cherry picker holds back of engine from laying on center link. This weekend I wll be pulling it or at least taking TC out as you guys say. What your saying with the spray bomb is, because the bolt pattern only line up a certain way do this so I am not fighting to get correct ones lined up? Is that right?  Dropping susp. would be easiest if I were at the beginning but I am a little far at this point. FYI I was able to get Hemi off of engine stand, onto cheery picker and into engine bay, solo! I have an engine tilter and that saved a lot of hassles, but not even I thought I could get this done. My buddy was suppose to help but could not make it and I had to beat the rain so I had no choice. Yeah I know its crazy, even my wife could not believe I got it done. Thanks again for the help everyone.
