Carports
« on: May 18, 2006 - 12:16:13 PM »
I am thinking of getting a carport. I don't have anything now to keep my cars in or under.
I do keep car covers on my cars but that is not enough to keep the water off them. And now my paint is showing bubbles. I was looking for a good sturdy carport that could be removed if needed.
I found this one and was wondering what you think.

I want one with the roof line like this. So I can install it next to my house without half the runoff going right next to the foundation of the house. This is the only one I have found made this way.
I am looking at the 20x20 even gable carport and one end panel.

Does anyone know of any others made this way. I do not want the gable ends to face front and back. The gables must be on the sides.  :feedback:

Are you talking about one of these.

I looked at this kind of thing. I don't want the runoff to go right down beside my house. Not lots of room here. And I just don't think this would last very long. I need something that is going to last and could be removed if needed.
I realy do need to do something soon.

NOt to much help here, but I had one of those "tent" garages as posted and it was kind of sucky.  Here in the NE in the winter water will seep in under it and if it freeze then it is a skating rink.  Gets very hot in the summer too.
Car port would be good, I'd add vinyl lattice to it to help cut down on lookie lous, wind and water and debris from blowing around inside.
I take it you are on a tight budget so looking into those prefab garages for $3200 and having a "contractor" come out and build something is out of the question.

I think the tent garage would be better than a car port unless you plan on closing in the sides of the car port. At least the tent completely covers up when needed.  :dunno:

I have ruled out the tents. It just won't work for us. We have to be able to get in the back yard (walk though it), so open back and front is a must. We like the Carport Structures but was just looking for other options. It must not be permanent in case we need to get a large piece of equipment in the back yard. I was also trying to find out if anyone has one of these or has seen one. Are they sturdy or are they junk? Or anyone else make something like this?

I am not one who is quick to spend money. So I am taking my time to do some more reseach. But this is the best one I have found that fits our needs so far.

Yea, budget is tight MyMopar and having one built is also out of the question.

David,

I wish I had some advice for you. Having seen your house, I know what you have in mind. I just know April and Joe went with the tent type of thing for his Cutless, and it didn't do so well in alot of snow. I'll keep my eye out for something.

It's a tough situation, wanting protection for your car but like all of us somewhere along the way the ole budget says "no way" to building a nice garage. I guess the climate where you live would dictate what type of portable structure you get. In the sunny south a carport will reflect the heat and sun and keep most of the rain off. But up north a carport would not be much use from October to May with the blowing wind and ice and snow. And either way these portable units are suspect to high winds that can "uproot" them causing more damage than just the weather. It's sort of a catch 22 situation, especially when these bigger and better built units are not cheap by any means, and I wonder how home owners insurance may look upon damage caused by one of these should things go bad in a high wind type storm?
