Help with dash cap/cover install
« on: May 18, 2006 - 04:00:53 PM »
I took out speaker grill and thought cap would fit right over dash, but it doesn't :banghead:
Has everyone had this problem. They say I should try to trim dash to make it fit :clueless:
What do I do? Should I put it in before windshield install?

Did you take out the dash first?  I just did mine, I took out the 4 bolts in the vents, and loosened the bolts on the sides at the bottom of the dash, and it tilted forward enough for me to get the cap on.  I didn't have to trim mine although I did have to trim the old dash were it was cracked and raised up.
Definately do it before you put the windshield back in, those bolts in the vents are almost impossible to get back in with the windshield in.

I bought one of these used from a friend. I looks very nice and good enough for a driver. The four holes are cut out for the speaker grill feet, so the grill screws can be used to pull down the dash and hold it tight.  I see caps in MCG for $85.    Cut out all of the rotten foam around the cracks and use clear silicone to hold it down.

Anybody have a used Challenger one for sale cheap?   Please PM me.

I just used a little bit of the glue, it says not to put any in the middle of the pad, just the edges.  I do admit I didn't use quite enough

I got one it fits prettu good except the VIN area.  There was agood article in Mopar action I believe Do a search on google for dash cap install or maybe someone else has the link.  You can do it in the car but I would/did  get some black paint for the area along the windshield take your time. Only needed if your dash is not black of course!  Good luck.  It is just Black Silicone they give you and you can buy it in tubes to make your life easier.

They are a snug fit that you may need to shoehorn on. I only sliconed around the defrost and ac vent edges and clamped it up. It was out of the car. The VIN area is a lousy fit and a dead giveaway that its a cap.

I guess the redeeming aspects of these are price and appearance. Most people wont know and others that do will have to look close to tell

I sent it back b/c my dash seemed to bow up in the middle and didn't want to hack up my dash.
