Power brakes very grabby
« on: May 19, 2006 - 01:34:53 PM »
I'm still waiting on my manual to come in but I have this question that has been bothering me.  The brakes on my 73 Challenger are WAY to touchy.  I can get whiplash driving and stopping.
Power brakes, discs in front, drums in rear.
I adjusted the rear drums and that was about all for now.  What can cause such a condition.  Is the brake booster "overboosting" and cause a spike in pedal pressure whn I apply the brakes.  I am talking lightly foot on the pedal and 4 wheel lock.

if the pads or shoes are contaminated with oil they can get very touchy

Make sure that your brakes are clean like Chryco suggested first.  If they are clean, unbolt the 4 bolts holding the master cylinder to the booster. Pull it away far enough to adjust the pushrod coming out of the booster. Try adjusting it IN a little at a time to see if the problem changes.  I'm thinking that the booster isn't letting the master cylinder get back to the release position.

Why would oil/grease make the brakes touchy, I'd think just the opposite would be true.  Do teh pads absorb the oil and swell?

The Moisture does not let them slip and tighten up with heat.   Like a fireman trying to slide down the pole with a wet sweaty skin, too sticky.

I understand now, but you could have used a better analogy   :eek7: :eek4: :puke:

I couldn't think of anything else at the time that doesn't slip and slide better with lube, without getting nasty.
