Opinions Please about adding a Shaker hood to my 1970 SE
« on: May 20, 2006 - 01:52:33 PM »
Here is my question.. I have always liked the Shaker hood and have recently purchased 1970 Challenger you may have seen my posts "We sold it new at the dealership I work at" The car is pretty pure so I hate to cut it up.but here is what I am thinking if I find a flat hood keep the original and make a shaker hood out of the donar what harm is that.
I guess I ramble a bit I know it is my car and I am free to do with it what I want ,but there are so few all original cars out there in the sea of "clones" I am torn. In my searching I found a source for what seems to be pretty kool kit at www.shakerhood.com that seems to sell a comple kit for flat hood conversion. Does anyone know about the quality of their product?
Thanks Again
Jeff

If that car is as original as I think it is I would not. Also the SE is more of a luxury model. IMHO  :grinno:

Personally, I would do whatever turns you on. Don't let anyone burst your bubble. Sometimes they hate you because they ain't you. Know what I mean.
I installed a shaker hood on my car last summer and have never regretted it. As for shakerhood.com, don't waste your money. You'll find it very difficult to make that flange correctly to where the ring will fit right. It took Gean Gregory several hoods to finally figure out how to install that flange correctly.
From what I've heard, Harms makes a better setup that's easier to install by the do-it-yourselfer. Myself, I bought a complete kit from sixpackperformance that was built by Gean Gregory. Was around $4200 and all I had to do was paint to match. I love watching that bubble shake. Will never put that bulge hood back on again.
I say go for it. Life's short...play hard.

If you intend to take the car to shows, you will see that people LOVE the shaker hoods and the shaker decal on the inside! It also will add about 10k to the value of the car.
Go ahead dude shaker that cuda!

I've thought about doing it to my Cuda and still might. Just keep the parts and make it the way you want it.  I had two original shaker hood Challengers in the 70's and 80's and they were pretty cool cars. My 67 Vete is an all original numbers matching car but I've got that motor on a stand and put one in that I can redline

YEP !   keep them and label them.

I have my original flat hood (and much more) safely in the garage.    There isnt anything I did to my all-original SE car that cant be put back to original.  (stiching in a new tranny pump is like stiching in a new floorpan or trunk floor in my opinion)
