71 cuda bumper brackets?????
« on: May 22, 2006 - 02:18:01 AM »
Hi guys, turns out that I have no bumper brackets with my recently bought 71 cuda project. She has a front rubber bumper a chromed in rear. Do these brackets interchange for E-bodies 70-74 both front and rear? And did the use some special brackets for the rubber bumper in front? Anyone?

4C can tell you better than I can, but Cuda and Challenger brackets will not interchange. You will need a set from a 70 or 71 Cuda for the front. As for the rear, you will need a set from a 70-72 Cuda. This is all an educated guess on my part here.  :1zhelp:

based on the fact that the road light bracket is different  between the 70 & 71 Cuda the bumper braket must be also so I believe it is a 1 year only piece for the front bumper

Not true.  The Cuda front bumper brackets are the same part number for 1970 and 1971.  MEK did pretty well on the whole situation.  I do believe the rubber bumpers had special brackets but not sure what was different about them.  I have also seen some metal bumpers made into rubber bumpers so the metal bumper brackets would work.  Hope this helps.

What about the '72 thru '74 'Cudas, did they share the same front brackets?  I have a re-chromed bumper that I "think" is for a '72 but I have no other one to compare to, where are the mounting holes for the '72?  Anyone have good pics of one, AND its correct brackets?

Thanks, Chryco, I'm just trying to sort out what the heck I have and what I need to make this "new" bumper fit.  I'm pretty sure the old one is a '70 or '71 with matching brackets; the new one I have is supposed to be a '72 but I am not sure on that, it has no numbers on it; it sure as heck does not line up with the existing brackets.  I just wonder if the '72 thru '74 bumpers all bolt up the same, or am I now looking for very specific brackets  :clueless:   The holes for the gaurds are in a different location too.

Assuming Cuda's are like Challenger's(iffy assumtion at best), The bolt pattern for the 70 thru 72 are the same. The only difference is the 72 bumper has a slot for the jack. They share the same brackets also. Starting in 73, the bolt pattern and brackets changed. They also went to BIG bumper gaurds.

Here are some pictures of the bumper and a few of the two bumpers together; quite a difference between the two profiles.  Hopefully the new ons IS a '72 and IS for a 'Cuda.   :)

The brackets I have now are numbers 269262284 and '285; they do not fit the new bumper.

Those brackets are 1970 and 71 cuda front bumper brackets and match the numbers I posted above.  I believe they fit only those two years of barracudas.

I figured that much after reading your post, I was merely indicating which ones are on the car now.  It had a '70 or '71 bumper on it.  What I am trying to do is verify specifically which year the new bumper is so I can find the correct brackets for it.  Thanks for pointing that out again though.

I pray not, at least not the re-chromed one (top & right) is supposed to be a '72 'Cuda bumper (what I need), the other one (bottom and left) was on my car when I got it and I beleve it to be a '70 or '71 'Cuda bumper.  The brackets it was bolted to are for a '70-'71 'Cuda.

in the second last pic #654  the right bumper has angled ends where the left is squared off
the angled bumper on the right is a Chall , the left is a Cuda

looks like it , it is harder to tell looking at the front but the second last pic from the end you can clearly see the different angle at the end of the bumper
