Interesting, look at the antenna.  It's on the right rear quarter panel, like the export models.



Oop...my bad...the antenna's in the regular spot.  :-[  Looked like rear quarter in the first pic.

Yes I know, tons of red!!! He even painted the Hurst gear handle in red before swapping the gearbox. Lady, your car is fantastic and so is your website

I do not have anything other than the VIN. Is there any hope of getting to the roots of my car's origin??

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I knew he should sign up here and ask away, as the DF crowd is more geared to modern iron, and I knew he could get the info he needed here. Even though I'm mainly a 'B' guy, they still let me hang around! ;)

Hi there. Hope you had a good week end.
When you say that, do you mean from rarity point of view or power-performance.
I have not seen the car yet, but I am still chacing a contact who claims that he knows someone with such a car. I am praying all the time.
On the other hand, I am equally being promised yet another 1971 conv 383 magnum that is still absolutely original with very low mileage. That would be an opportunity of a lifetime to find 2 out of 41 exported. I will also have the opportunity of comparing notes with the one I have that has been changed quite a bit. Olease pray for me too, that I do find these cars :bigsmile:

Sort of both in my opinion but it definately didn't have the power of the Hemi.  Mopar and Pontiac worlds are a wee bit different.

Given that this engine was introduced post 1972 when most if not all manufacturers were down sizing engine size and horsepower, the SD 455 was a great engine in the time of emissions, decreased power, and performance.

"Comments: 1973 saw some significant new changes to the Firebird, including a new eggcrate grille and a revised front bumper. Engine ratings were down again, with the 350 rated at a mere 150 bhp and the 400 at 250 bhp. But two things would save the Firebird and firmly establish Pontiac as the performance manufacturer during the dark days of the 1970s. The first was the introduction of a new Super Duty 455 V8 (SD-455). "Super Duty" was the name Pontiac used on its high performance (i.e. race ready) engines in the early 1960's, and the Super Duty 455 was a street legal race prepped engine. All SD-455's were hand assembled, and had a reinforced block, special cam shaft, aluminum pistons, oversize valves and header-like exhaust manifolds. Pontiac rated the SD-455 engines at a stout 310 bhp and 390 lb-ft, but experts agreed that it was closer to 370 bhp. This level of engine ratings were unheard of in an era when other manufacturer's engines' output were falling dramatically, and the Firebird became the only true performance car remaining in the market. Unfortunately, Super Duty engines were expensive and therefore rare; only 252 Trans Am's and 43 Formula 455's received the SD-455 engine. The second major coup for the Firebird was the introduction of a new Firebird decal on the Trans Am, which covered almost the entire hood and was quickly nick-named "the screaming chicken," which added to the excitement and popularity of the entire Firebird lineup. Sales of the Firebird and Trans Am were up dramatically, ensuring their survival.

Engines: 350 V8 150 bhp. 400 V8 230 bhp @ 4400rpm, 325 lb-ft @ 3200 rpm. 455 V8 250 bhp @ 4000 rpm, 370 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm. 455 (SD) V8 310 bhp @ 4000 rpm, 390 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm.

Thank you buddy. You seem to be into a wonderful project, and I am impressed that you are so young!!!

I have just found and bought another '71 R/T 383 Magnum and you are giving me a good idea of how to go about restoring it. It has much rust, although in small bits here and there.
By the way, I am asking this question to everyone, do you knwo of a good on-line parts dealer for the Challenger. I need a few parts to make both cars look good.

Rev, I just saw the thread relating to the suppliers addresses. Wow, thanks a bunch to you and to all the members who added to it. I have copied all the addresses, and will be exploring them one by one!

Hemi71 Awsome car you have. Actually none of my cars have a fender tag. These painters in this part of the world have no respect for them, and as the cars get painted, they discard the tags :pullinghair: What I still have is the tag on the R/T door (see photo), other than the vin numbers on both cars. What does the s (special) stand for. Is it for the cloth seats? (Photos in the tech section "Interior and gauges" under "Originality of 71 Conv Challenger"
Also, what is the meaning of 6-71 above the vin code?
Interestingly enough, both cars come from the same plant and the same 383 4bbl engines.

360Cuda Thanks, you too have a great taste! I have just been shown a 71 cuda that needs a home and tons of restoration. Will keep you posted
