Need Advice on Collector/Classic Car Insurance
« on: May 23, 2006 - 03:51:57 PM »
Greetings Members,

I am currently researching for best choices on Collector/Classic car insurance.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  The policy will need to be written for California.  Letting me know of any negative and positive experiences that you've had with your insurer would be appreciated as well.

Thanks.

There are several companies that insure these cars.  I went with Grundy.  Many here are with Haggarty.  Both have been in business many years.  Rates are comparable.  Both have limitations/exclusion clauses.  The Beast is insured to a stated value, unlimited mileage, for a reasonable price.  They require that the car be kept inside when not being used.  I also had to send them a couple of photos and a copy of the appraisal.  Plenty of options here, maybe take some time on the internet and research what is best for your situation. Happily, I haven't had to file a claim.  Can't say how they respond to claims...  Maybe someone here can help with that...........    :cooldancing:

  :iagree:

I'm with Grundy too. I didn't even have to argue with them about the value. Just sent them a few pictures. Thank goodness the rates on these classic cars is much less than the daily drivers we have.  :worshippy

I'm with Haggerty, same deal as the other guys, pics, garage kept, and a promise that you'll never drive it.  (just kidding)
They're very good about rates because they believe people with classic cars will take care of them better than a normal car owner. (Does that make us all abnormal?)

Hagerty here. Don't know much about Grundy but sounds comparable. Cheap rates compared to your daily driver. :grinyes:

I had American Collectors for 16 years and never had a problem with them--but then again I never filed a claim yet either. That is when you find out just how good they are or are not..

Knowing a friend who hit a deer and needed to file a claim with Hagerty, and was assisted quickly, I use Hagerty. I used to have Grundy and had several problems with them, mostly with SLOW responce with address changes etc. Also was told by them no driving unless going to or from a cruise or show. Stop to eat either direction to or from one of these events and you will not be covered. I'm sure others have had good experiences but 2 months to change my address is to long for me.

Thanks Folks.  I've been looking back at prior postings and feedback regarding this topic (I might have posted it in the wrong category, have seen others moved to "Off Topic").  It's certainly a varied market.  BTW, this is for a modified 1970 Challenger.  So rates on modifieds are higher.  Anyway, JC Taylor has quoted $723.00 for an "Agreed Value" of $99,000 w/minimum liability, comp and collision.  Hagerty has quoted $1,477.00 with similar coverage (Ouch!!).  I can't get a quote from Grundy online (will need to call due to liability rates applying to my territory).  AON Collector Car Insurance has quoted $846.00 with $500.00 deductible.  I just received a quote from Leland-West Insurance (based in Fresno, CA) for similar coverage (but with 1K deductible) for $477.00.  They have been in business since 1991 and have been insuring all makes and models of collector cars since 1995.  The research will continue.
Your continued responses and feedback are priceless and greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have American Collectors Insurance with a agreed value. Just send pictures and value you want insured for. I'm limited to 5,000 miles a year and must be garaged when not used with no deductible. Good luck and I shopped around and found this was the best for me.

Check with Parrish-Heathingy also. Their rates are good and you get a nice discount if your collection is worth over $150,000. Is there a way to find the insurance ratings on these companies?

Hello Folks,

Still looking for best option for insurance.  Most companies have quoted between 1K and 1.5K per year on "Agreed Value" of 99K.  These rates seem awfully high, but apparantly, rates are half that if I don't select "modified" on the quote form.  So the car's had some drive-train performance improvements ....... what's the big deal?

Your continued feedback is greatly appreciated.

I talked with Grundy, and found out that most states are good to go, SC, and MD have to oddest laws and make life difficult...would you not know I had to live in SC....

Grundy will only cover a car 25 years old or older in SC/MD....cant get coverage for a brand new 1932 ford roadster (for example) no matter how much money you have put into it....but you Gremlin will be OK

keep in mind that has to do with State laws.....

Also note that grundy is not the name that you insurane will be under at the DMV...you need to get their Underwriter's name for Your state.... :chatting:
