I'm repainting my 'cuda to original.  What color do I want to paint the shaker ... argent, body color or black?  My data plate doesn't say.  Also, what about the lower "gills" ... black or argent?

I think black is the most common and red is the only car that had a body colored shaker.  Welcome to cc.com 1970hemicuda!  Sure would like to see some pics of your ride!  Hope you enjoy the site!

1970,

First off, Welcome to C-C.com.  Can you tell us what the original color of your car is?

If the interior is red also, I'd go with red.  If the interior is black, go with black.  If white interiored, go with argent.

Black interior ... is this a matter of personal preference as opposed to Chrysler's way of doing it, or was there no rhyme or reason to the shaker's color?

Can't remember where (maybe Barracuda Challenger Restoers Guide), but read something that said shakers from factory were Argent in 1970 and black in 71 with body colour when applicable.

There is supposed to be one yellow one made also.

I second that welcome to the group! Is your car an real R code hemicuda, or a clone? If a clone, are you using a vintage block or crate?

I believe the early build 70 red cudas used red shaker bubbles but after they found issues with the red clinging onto the shaker material, they switched to argent only. Black came in '71 but it is your car, your preference!

Post your data plate if you can...there are gurus here like you would never know who would be able to build your car from the codes. Have you located a broadcast sheet yet, if not, and if the car still has its original interior handy, there are several places to look.

Finally......to say the least   :useless:

Build date will tell us what color it came with.  Post your Fender Tag.

Does your car have rubber bumbers and painted mirrors?
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Except for a very FEW body colored ones, all 70 shaker bubbles were argent from the factory

I will double check the dates tonight... In early 1970 ALL FE5 red shaker cars came with a red turtle, painted red mirrors, and red rubber bumbers.  I know where I would put my money if I was betting.
