How far should I tear down my 340....
« on: May 25, 2006 - 01:09:21 PM »
My 70 challenger is at the body shop getting a facelift, and I want to get the Engine ready while the body is away. It has been on the engine stand for a few years. I took it apart , and it looks good, but I am being told the best way is to completely rip it down, give it an acid bath, and put her back together. While Im at it I should also put a new set of rings in. Keep in mind that this engine was completely rebuilt years ago and has about 10-12 hours on it. It never got broken in before I ripped the engine out again to have the body done over. How far should I go? I promise to put some pictures in when I get some... Thanks for any input. I could really use your opinions....Ike

If there isn't any rust on the cylinders, cover all of the holes, put in brass freeze plugs, freshen all of it's paint, then get it ready to bolt back in.  It sounds like it's already rebuilt.

While it's on the stand, pull all the plugs, put in fresh oil and filter, prime the pump by hand till you get oil pressure.

with only 10 hrs on it I would leave the rings & pistons in the bores as is
