727 internals swap (SB to BB)
« on: May 25, 2006 - 03:00:15 PM »
Hello. I have a small block 727 in good working order and an empty big block 727 case. I would like to swap the internals to the BB case and put it behind a 383 I have. Can this be done? Also, if the SB tranny has the 3 pinion front planetary set, will it be strong enough for a hi-po 383?

SB 727:  pk4329438 8453 8567

BB 727: pk4028412 5400 4716

the only difference between a sb and a bb 727 is the bellhousing for all practical sense and purpose.  everything will swap.  The 3 gear planetary will hold.  Your engine is making only around the 335hp correct?  I would only worry about adding a 4 gear planetary when you are getting 400 or more hp.  hope that helps.  If you have any more questions, let me know.

If you put the small block valvebody on the big block case  you have to watch the rear 7/16 valve body bolt pattern as the middle hole on some is off set the other way, if that is the case, you just file the hole (in the seperater plate) to the point that it lines up.The three pinion planet will hold alot of horsepower, I have a couple of 750 to 800 HP max wedge race cars that I sponser that have run three pinion planets in them for 6-7 years now. The weak spot is really the planet splines to the output shaft .(on any planetary)  They haven't failed there either though.

Thanks for the help!

RD: Yes, the 383 should be around 335hp. Took it out of the 'Cuda to make way for a 440. Not planning on doing anything to the 383, as it will be plenty enough as it is to replace a smog 318.

tac: I'll keep an eye on that rear bolt hole. Thanks for the tip!

Any rebuild kit preferences out there? Looking to do this on the cheap so I can concentrate funds on the Barracuda. I will likely get a Transgo TF2 kit as well. I threw in a TF3 in my Power Wagon back in the day and liked it, but I think I want to kick it down a notch.

As long as the clutches are Raybestos or Borg Warner brand the cheapest price is the best deal!!!!!!!!!!! How soon are you going to be doing this? I am going to post a thread on how to bump up the performance of a TF-1 or a TF-SC Transgo Shift kits in the near future if you can wait it will have some good info.

Okay, Raybestos or Borg Warner. Got it.

The time frame is that I would like to have it running by the end of June. While I am waiting for the body shop that started on my 'Cuda to reopen at their new location, I started tinkering with my dead 1975 shorty Tradesman van. So last week I decided that I wasn't going to waste my time on the tired old smog 318 and would see if the 383 would fit. Took some measurements, and it looks good. There's still so much work to do on the van that I can hold off on the transmission for a couple of weeks. It's ready to come out now with just the rear mount holding it in, but I probably won't take it out until Thursday when my buddy brings his engine hoist around. Don't really want the 318 just hanging there. Especially considering that I am doing this in the back parking lot of work.
