Pardon my rant.... I've seen alot of transporter posts on the site (seems like every week or two).  I've often added my  . I do buy a fair amount of collision damaged rental cars from surrounding states. I've seen alot of you claim to have cars brought from half way across the country, in the $1100 to $1600 range. Anyway the guy I use to hall out of Michigan lost his authority (temporraily so he says). So I go though some of the last transport posts and see who's been using who. Make some calls , send some e-

Gas has definitely had something to do with it!

Yeah, you just give them a date to pick-up, but they get there anytime after that when it's in there travel path. It could be a week later or something. Also, the biggest cost issue is if you want the car on an enclosed or open trailor.

I use a guy out of Columbus, OH. He charges $1 per mile one way. He can usually transport anything to your door in about 7 days or less. He uses an open trailer.

When I sold my 318 barracuda.. cost for the buyer was $1100 from NJ to WA using an enclosed trailer.

71FISH I think you nailed ir $1100 top go a BAZILLION MILES!! And average quotes of $750 to $850 to go a couple hundred. And I don't even care what kind of trailer it's on. Hell you could bring it in the back of a quad axle dump truck for all I care!

These prices sound pretty good...If I was to haul a car from say Detroit to LA, it would be more than that.  1st---I get about 10 mpg when pulling the 24' enclosed trailer.   I would have to get from Ga to Detroit--about 800 miles.  then from Detroit to LA--about 2300 miles, then from LA back to Ga--about 3400 miles.  Total mileage---6500 miles.   That would be 650 gallons of fuel @ $ 3.25 per gallon = $2112.50---Just for fuel.  Then I would be on the road for at least 6-7 nights.....motel  7 nights X $75.00 = $525.00.   Now I am up to $2,637.50 in costs.  NO PROFIT figured in at all.  I don't see how they move individual cars that cheap.  The only way to make it work is to haul several cars at once.....  Just my 0.02..          Oldschool

If it's a commonly traveled route, like coast to coast, it's actually cheaper than a route a little more off the beaten track. Also, if you want door to door, thats more expensive than terminal to terminal. Last time i shipped a car to europe, it was about 1/2 the cost of shipping a car from here in PA to California. That was with me dropping it off at the shipper, and the car being picked up in port in Europe. 

If you are hauling only one or two cars in an enclosed trailer, the cost is going to be appreciably higher than a guy hauling 6-8 cars on a big semi. On the higher end cars, I'm willing to pay the $$ diff to get that "personal" touch of a 1 or 2 car enclosed hauler than the cheaper guy with the contract driver with 6 other cars on the trailer.

  Hey, that may be a good "spare money" idea for my retirement, buy a 3/4 ton Dodge dulley with a Cummings, buy or rent a trailer and advertise, "Have truck - will deliver". What a blast, traveling the country, seeing all these beautiful Mopars, and still get paid for it. But piety the poor chevy bastard if a Mopar is "calling me", he can wait or dial another number

My dad used to "hot shot" with his 96 dodge dually and a 3 car trailer back before gas prices were so high.  It was an average of $400-$500 per car for a trip from say OK to FL.  His 12 valve cummins got better milage than the newer 24 valve, but cost was still high.  Things people don't see is the hidden costs...... Insurance is the #1 thing, then you have different road use taxes, and fuel permits, ect.  The biggest problem he had was most of his loads were billed instead of COD since he was leased with someone to avoid the high cost of getting operation authority.  The billed load didn't pay him till the person he was leased to got paid, then they had their processing time.  There was good money in it sometimes, but the overall picture made him give it up.  And he was an over the road truck driver for 31 years so he knew the business pretty well.
