sanden a/c compressor on smallblock

anyone have pictures of changing out factory a/c compressor to sanden compressor on smallblocks

I'm doing that very thing on my 340 right now. Am having to go with a custom pulleys and brackets. If you are interested I have a Sanden mount kit for SB mopar if you are interested. Most parts have been chromed. By the time I started to put it on I realized it wouldnt work with my aftermarket MP manifold.

I noticed the bracket had an idler pulley. I have seen an install that used no idler,belt tension was as stock with alt. Don't know who makes kit or whether it was custom. Just planning conversion now and getting ideas. Will keep your bracket in mind. Thanks Ricky

I dont know of any kits for small blocks unledd you have original brackets and setup for the RV4. they make a saddle plate that mounts the Sanden in the same position as the RV4 and uses the alt as the tensioner. To my knowledge, the alt tensioner/dual belt setup would have to be custom. This guy has some pretty well designed kits. Ck him out

That is the install I saw at a show. It was on an A-body. Wonder if you could just use the small compressor and make up hoses and use the same condenser, dryer, expansion valve. Thanks for the info and link. Ricky

I went to the local Pick and Pull and saw 4 small blocks with the new style compressor.  The brackets were a little different than the V type, but were complete. Seems like the junk yards around you should have the same small blocks around. Most of these still had pressure in them.

To answer your question all of the original parts can be used, I have converted both of my e-bodys to sanden compressors. You can find the bracket and compressor at Bouchillon performance as stated above. You will only use 1 belt though. Seems to work fine as the sanden compressor takes a fraction of the HP to run as the RV2. I attached a pic minus the hoses to the compressor which just need the sanden ends attached with a bubble crimping tool. I like this setup because you don't use an idler pulley and you also use all of your existing pulleys. If you want a pic of the complete setup I can get it tomorrow.

Yes the brace is there, although I think it would work fine without it.

I am interested in what you did here as my car is also A/C though I released the cooling stuff when I did a motor swap and have not recharged it yet.....

So....

According to BP website the old RV2s didnt use a cycling switch but the Sandens do ?  You need to put a probe on the part of the hose that is right at the firewall goin on into the heater box.  (pics are on the BP site) regarding cycling switch.

Youre install really looks a lot better than the demo cuda install that is on the BP site.   :cheers:

Robb, thanks. Everything on my setup is orignally how the factory installed it. The condenser, evaporator, dryer, and all lines are factory parts, the only deviation is the compressor, compressor mounting bracket, and the hose ends at the compressor. I didn't want to modify my car so I decided to go with the factory parts. Bouchillon's car is ok but it dosen't look right to me. (They also argued with me about doing it my way) I also installed a cycling switch at the suction line as it exits the evaporator. If you need more pics or info let me know. Jim

Those probes are for the expansion valve, there was no cycling switch from the factory in the early 70's, and yes there is a low press cutoff switch on the dryer
