You know it is odd that you got so upset and mentioned how you stopped to think of your own girl, but you also posted this?  What side of the fence are you on?
http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=21553.0 - I'm sure what you did was safe for the most part, but you never know, they could have crashed trying to catch up to you and killed someone.

Agreed that this DOES make me seem hypocritical, indeed, however, when we were goofin around, it was very early on a Sunday morning on a barren hwy with no collector lanes, so there were no chances of anybody innocently coming across us.  It was only when we took an off-ramp that we all slowed down, and drove properly.

wow..this thread took on a life!

As long as we are all respectful to each other, we can continue this discussion.  Remember...no personal attacks.

I believe it is easy to be aloof or unattached to this issue if not directly involved and it sounds like some opinions here come from that perspective.  I would venture to guess that if this situation hit home, where your wife or child were killed, a person might have a different point of view.  The person then would want justice, not only for his own family, but to ensure that this doesn't happen to other families.

Well I'm glad to see that you looked at the variables involved in your adventure and figured the risks were low.  I've done the same thing myself in the past.  I'm not going to tell you how to parent just that I hope you are careful and think about the ones you might leave behind.  You never can trust the car next to you and that is why I shy away from the whole street racing/showing off.  My car is good and I know it.

And for Bonkers, the racers commited what we call manslaughter in the US - the act of killing a person unlawfully but not intentionally, or by negligence.  They should pay the price, but I have a problem with the government always footing the bill.  They are not "dangerous criminals" so I think they should have a record, be required to do community service for the amount of years they would see jail time and have to pay a set amount of money per week/month for the rest of their lives to a trustfund for the girl to remind them of the lives they took.  Also they should have to drive cars that have a limited top speed of 55 mph (or whatever km).
People need ot own up for their actions, don't like it then don't do it.  They didn't cause an accident (a tree falling on your car is an accident) they caused a careless wreck.

I agree with most. We all put our foot down now and then and if you say you don't, you're lying plain and simple.
But there's a difference, putting your foot down up to the speed limit on the highway/open stop light area to hear that 440ci and racing are two different games altogether. These idiots are racing around schools and busy pedestrian areas well over the speed limit, the sad fact is, most can not drive under such conditions.......

I'll continue to have fun with my car I'll slam the go pedal 2 or 3+ times each drive but in a non populated area like the highway or a city limit stop light. I'll stop at the speed limit (or slightly above) and coast back down to a cruise.
This is where you usually see racers and idiots speed on by up until their car red-lines in final gear.

Remember when condemning such activities that most who have done so in this thread encourage burnouts and applaud the burnout photos/videos in the Photos section. What's different about that? Burnouts can get out of control real quick and become an ugly situation in bad conditions or simply from lack of doing them. One of our Mods has a photo in their signature doing a burnout in a public street. I love the photo and the Mod, it's simply just some food for thought.

 :iagree:

The bottom line of this all is two people are DEAD as a direct result of the irresponsible actions of that driver. To say it's only two people and people die every day is absolute BS! When the driver chose to exceed the speed limit and put others at risk, he (she) chose to accept the consequences if they hurt someone. And that means JAIL time, life long resitution to the innocent surviving victim (the 7 yr old girl is a victim of this accident, even if she wasn't in the car), and restricting the driving priviliges of the offending driver.

Too many times today people dont accept responsibility for their own actions, and want to let others shirk theirs as well.

Our justice system is not supposed to be about "vengeance"

Sorry to say but 2 deaths in a world of nearly 5 billion people really doesn't make much of a mark in terms of global suffering.

Do I feel for the orphan? yes I do.  Am I likely to track her down and offer support of some kind ? no.     Are you ? probably not.

I do agree the responsible drivers should be forced to pay restitution throughout the girls childhood years. And spend time in jail. But we the people have voted in laws that say the death penalty is to be used only in certain situations, or not at all in some states.

Everybody made choices that affected the outcome, from what time they left there house, to which route they drove.

In the extreme, what if the parents had been driving a Volvo with 6 airbags, or a Dodge 3500 truck ?   Their chances of survival would have been greatly increased.

Before you rip on me as you have Bonkers, I'd like to know how many needy children you've adopted. What percentage of your salary you've donated towards alleviating world hunger, what congressman you've written to get them to act against things you don't agree with.   It's always easy to talk a big game , and seldom is there any action....   And yeah, if it were someone I knew directly, I'd have stronger feelings on the subject.

well how 'bout this...Canada is enacting laws that will put anybody who kills another person as a result of street racing in jail for LIFE!!  ta-da!!

in Canada, a death of any kind is actually news, since we aren't out killing each other a-dozen-a-day for an iPod or new 'kicks', and when death does happen, we react!  It wasn't just me who was upset over the backwards hat brigade taking out innocent people...bye-bye Honda, helloooooooooo Bubba the cellmate!!  just bite the pillow and think 'calm blue ocean, calm blue ocean'!

yeah, I could make a few really funny comments about a drunken evening with your hideous mom/wife/sister/girlfriend...but this is a friendly site, and I'd hate to get into a flame war with a fellow MoPar-ite.  Y'know what they say...fighting on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics!

Thanks for the happy picture NZ !

It's cool , the next time 72Chally wakes up trembling , and with an itchy rear, if he wants to imagine he was drunk enough to have the courage to approach my hideous mom/wife/sister/girlfriend, and that gives him some comfort, it's Ok with me.

Wow, that was an interesting read thumbing through all the pages. :clueless:  As for the original reason for this post, that is really a sad story, especially since they're leaving a younger daughter behind.  As for the j-a's who were at fault, they should understand the consequences of vehicular manslaughter of the first degree to the full extent so they learn from their mistake.  Though I never street-raced, I am considered an aggressive driver, but not to the point where I'm a hazard on the road.  I'm a strong believer in when you want to flex what you and your car can do, either bring it to a local track or literally block off an old stretch of roadway way out of town and do any racing in the daytime just in case someone does ever make it down the road. (We have a lot of dead-end roads that are nice and flat where people usually do race should they have the urge to do so.)

actually, we were done when I said it was pointless to start a flame war and called a truce, then NZ posted his cute l'il pic.  You just felt the need to get in the last little comment, and do a Ricer Fly-By.  It's ok, tho.  Once you're mature enough turn your hat around, stop piercing stuff that shouldn't be pierced, and wear clothes that fit, you won't feel the need to do that anymore.  Just PLEASE don't fill your '74 with subwoofers, k?

mods, feel free to delete the last few postings, since they offer nothing to my original thread...thanks

I think it is time to kill this thread, it has been nothing but a downer. Someone dig a hole and lock this one up in Davy Jones's locker.  :aarg:
