340 block blues

Well, last year went to the Saskatchewan mopar web page (Cananda) as it is our neighbour province and bought a 340 block and crank on their classified ad page. Been buying parts for it and just got a call from the machine shop. Congradulations on the purchase of your boat anchor. Figures. I am weary of Ebay, but thouhgt a fellow Mopar nut would be a straight shooter.

What is wrong with the block that it can't be used?

It is already bored out 40 over and is pitted too much to save by going 60 over. The crank is beyond turning(max already). It is too expensive to sleeve it. I bought it as a 71 block and it is a 73 block. Should of known then.

How much were you looking at to sleeve the motor?

I would consider going with a 360.  Used ones are easier to find and you can even get a Mopar Performance 360 short block for less money than machining, pistons, rings and bearings will cost.  MP also makes a new 340 block but it will need boring and honing and you still don't have a crank.

I am thinking 360 but have fallen in love with the 340's. Sleeving is over 75 a cylinder

Its tuff to find a cheap 340 anymore,so many people are restoring mopars now.I lucked out a couple months ago and got a complete standard bore HP short block for 100 bucks.I negotiated the price stating it could be a boat anchor and got him down to 100.The machine shop said it would go .30 over after i had it tanked and magnufluxed.Now for a car to put in in.....I am looking ofr a 67-69 dart project(as if i dont have enuf already)Also got a fresh set of 202 J heads waiting for the motor to be rebuilt.Were all 340's HP motors?

I believe that the 340s up to '70/71 were 275 hp.  They had the X heads.  The '72/73 340s had reduced compression and the J heads and were lower hp.  The hp rating method also changed to it's hard to compare.  I could be out a year on the  dates.

J heads were 70@71 340's,the X heads were smaller intake valves than the "J".I dont think you could get 202 heads in the later 72-74 340 due to smog.Correct me if i am wrong,but i know for a fact the "j"'s were on the higher comp motors since mine are casted in 1970 off of a Cuda

I believe '70 was the last year of the 2.02 X head.  My '70 Swinger had them and my '73 340 had the smaller valved J head.

Saw a 68  GT convertible 273 auto (D for engine code)  for sale about two miles from my House. The guy had install a B-body rear end and a 383 with header and was asking $12K for it (48081) area code

Thank you,too rich for my blood,I can find many out there for under 5k and most projects are under 2k,which is what i want.I am looking at a 68 273 numbers car real clean with new paint for 4500.The guy will have a HARD time selling that car for 12k,I can buy a numbers GTS for that
